Step-by-step guide for creating a mermaid wreath

The Easiest Way to Make a Tulle Wreath

Tulle wreaths are a fun, easy and inexpensive way to create a perfect decoration for any holiday or party. They can bring you that much needed pop of color without breaking the bank as well. You can hang them in your front door or anywhere on an open wall that could use a little splash of seasonal beauty. The tulle can also be cut to any desired length and look gorgeous in any arrangement. There is no need to spend a lot of money on a store bough tulle wreath when you can just make one yourself and design it your way.

This tutorial is a step-by-step guide to show you how easy it is to create your work of art. I even had a little helper this time around, which made is so much more fun!

Let’s get started!

Making a tulle wreath is only as diffcult as picking out the colors you want to work with and the pattern to use them in. Follow these easy steps to make your own masterpiece with ease. For the sake of this tutorial, I am using a rainbow of colors because I plan on hanging my wreath throughout the Summer.

Supplies Needed

6” Wide tulle(glitter) ribbon, colors as desired (approx. 150 yds used in this tutorial)

Decorating Options: Silk flowers, plastic Easter eggs, lettering, etc.

Hot glue for decoration (optional)

I recommend working with the tulle in sections to make it easier to judge if you have enough of the colors that you want to use. Depending on your design, it would not be good if you have to run to the craft store because you ran out of the color(s) you needed!

Let’s Make: Chiyogami Wooden Mermaid Decorations

artcuts wooden mermaid craft shapes

Mermaids and Chiyogami Paper… Possibly the most perfect pair?! These three wooden mermaid decorations are a really great way to practise your crafting skills and play with bold patterns and colours! Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to decorate your own wooden mermaids.

To create the pink mermaid, you will need:

  • Wooden Mermaid
  • Chiyogami Paper: Deco Pink
  • Acrylic Paint: White Pearl & True Red
  • Ink Pad: Rocket Red and Persimmon
  • Rubber Stamp: Scallop Shell
  • Mini Wooden Shells
  • PVA glue
  • Fine grit sandpaper (or nail file)
  • Thin paint brush
  • Scissors

To create the blue mermaid, you will need:

  • Wooden Mermaid
  • Chiyogami Paper: Blue Shimmer
  • Acrylic Paint: White Pearl & Baby Blue
  • Ink Pad: Mediterranean Blue
  • Rubber Stamp: Scallop Shell
  • Mini Wooden Shells
  • PVA glue
  • Fine grit sandpaper (or nail file)
  • Thin paint brush
  • Scissors

To create the yellow mermaid, you will need:

  • Wooden Mermaid
  • Chiyogami Paper: Mustard Petals
  • Acrylic Paint: Emperor’s Gold
  • Ink Pad: Persimmon
  • Rubber Stamp: Scallop Shell
  • Mini Wooden Shells
  • PVA glue
  • Fine grit sandpaper (or nail file)
  • Thin paint brush
  • Scissors

How to create:

  1. Start by decorating the mermaid’s tail with your Chiyogami Paper. Cut the paper to approx 8.5cm x 8.5cm. Create a curve to match the top of her tail by trimming the top edge.
  2. Next, apply your PVA glue with a damp paintbrush all over the mermaid’s tail.
  3. Apply the Chiyogami paper straight onto the wooden tail, with the pattern facing up. Gently run your finger over the paper to press the paper in place.
  4. Once the paper is set and dry, trim away most of the excess leaving a few millimetres of paper.
  5. Using your sandpaper, sand away the excess by sanding firmly and quickly at a diagonal angel on the wood. We recommend folding the sandpaper in half and using the corner to get into tricker areas, such as under her arms. A nail file may also be used! For a more in-depth tutorial, watch our how-to video here.
  6. Next, stamp the shell bikini. Apply your ink pad to your scallop shell rubber stamp and stamp directly onto the wood to create 2 shell impressions on the mermaid chest. If you are new to stamping we recommend testing on a piece of paper first.
  7. Apply thin layers of acrylic paint to the mermaid’s hair, ensuring you leave the paint to dry between layers. To add shimmer to her hair apply a thin layer of White Pearl acrylic paint over the top.
  8. Finally, add a mini wooden shell embellishment (scallop shell, starfish or snail shell) to her hair. Colour the embellishment using the ink pad and pop a small blob of PVA glue on the reverse to secure onto her hair.
  9. String up your decorated mermaid with ribbon or fine jute string and you’re finished!
