How to sketch a mermaid for grown-ups

I Wish I Watched Frozen Growing Up Instead of The Little Mermaid

When I first scrolled through the Disney Plus movie and TV shows list, I was swept up in a wave of nostalgia. I was so excited to rewatch some of the movies I remembered loving as a child: Disney’s The Kid, Lion King II, The Little Mermaid, etc.

As I rewatched these movies, however, I was shocked by how horribly the women were portrayed. No wonder I was so fixated on relationships when I was younger. All of my early childhood women role models were depicted pining after men or needing a man’s help to succeed in some way.

No wonder I was so fixated on relationships when I was younger.

If you don’t believe me, let’s take a look at these movies:

Disney’s The Kid

My memory of this movie was a bit vague when I found it on Disney Plus. It was released in 2000 when I was eight, but I remembered thinking it was a really funny movie.

As I began watching this film, it quickly became apparent the main character (played by Bruce Willis) was not a nice guy. In summary, a successful businessman is magically visited by his eight-year-old self. Through their interactions and backstory, we learn why Russ appears unfeeling and has no important people in his life. Rusty, the little boy, reminds Russ of the man he wanted to be and helps him to reset the course of his life.

That’s all well and good, however, there is also a romantic interest in this movie. For no real apparent reason, Russ’s assistant, Amy, has feelings for him. He mocks her repeatedly throughout the film, commits shady acts, and doesn’t even really show her any serious affection — and yet she’s waiting for him.

The movie was ruined for me when at the very end of the movie, Russ completely breaks Amy’s trust and then appears at her house with a puppy — which apparently was supposed to be his way of apologizing without ever actually admitting any fault. She lets him in and we assume they live “happily ever after.”
