Huge endangered sea turtle washes up on Wexford beach
Walkers on Wexford’s Curracloe beach could scarcely believe their eyes in recent days as they stumbled upon a huge and ultra-rare sea turtle which had washed up on the shore.
The Leatherback sea turtle was sadly deceased by the time it was discovered by passers-by, many of whom were blown away by its sheer size.
Leatherback turtles are the largest of all living turtles and are known to measure up to 1.8 metres (5ft 11) and weigh up to 920kg. They are the only species of turtle that lack scales and a hard shell, instead having a rubbery black carapace.
Officially listed as an endangered species, the global population of leatherbacks has declined over 40% over the past three generations.

The discovery of this male Leatherback on the Co Wexford beach has been logged with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and data and DNA has been collected.
Local Wexford naturalist Jim Hurley says that while the discovery of a Leatherback turtle is “irregular”, it’s not unprecedented.
“In the past, it was thought that Leatherbacks were lost and way out of range when they turned up around the Wexford coast,” he said. “Now they are known to turn up from time to time to feed on jellyfish. Still, it would be slightly unusual to discover one.”
Mr Hurley noted a couple of instances of Leatherbacks getting tangled in fishing lines or washing up on beaches in Wexford.
“One major problem is that they can sometimes mistake plastic bags for jellyfish,” he said. “They swallow the plastic bag and end up choking. It’s awful that such a big animal can live such a long life only to end up choking on someone’s rubbish.”
The cause of death of this latest Leatherback is unclear, however, samples taken from its remains are set to be analysed.
There was a happier outcome almost exactly four years ago when the crew of a Wexford fishing boat discovered a huge leatherback sea turtle tangled up in one of their buoy lines.
The crew of the Mfv MEL struggled to free the huge turtle, which they said “must’ve been about six foot” and after a bit of manoeuvring, it swam away unharmed.
Similarly, in August of 2022, fishermen spotted a large Leatherback searching from jellyfish off Cahore, Co Wexford.
