Enhance your image with color balance adjustments

Learn how to easily adjust the hues and tones of your Photoshop document using the Color Balance and Photo Filter adjustments.

Color balance can be used to correct color imperfections in your image. You can also use color balance to create dramatic effects by changing the overall mixture of colors used in your composite. Photo Filter is another option that lets you apply a hue adjustment to your image. Photo Filter adjustments mimic the technique of placing a colored filter in front of your camera lens to adjust the color balance and temperature of the light transmitted through the lens and exposing the film.

Applying both Color Balance and Photo Filter as adjustment layers is a more flexible method to work with them because it gives you the ability to readjust the settings, creates a layer mask to affect a part of an image, and protects the original image from direct changes.

Apply color balance adjustments

In Photoshop, you can access the color balance adjustment option from any of the following locations:

  • In the Adjustments panel, click the Color Balance () icon.
  • Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance . Click OK in the New Layer dialog box.
  • In the Layers panel, click Create new fill or adjustment layer () icon. Select Color Balance from the context menu options.
  • You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Color Balance . However, this method applies destructive adjustments to the image layer and discards image information due to which you cannot restore the original image.

Once you select the color balance option, do the following:

In the Properties panel that opens, select any of the Tone balance options— Shadows, Midtones, or Highlights to select the tonal range in which you want to focus your edits.

(Optional) Select Preserve Luminosity to prevent changing the luminosity values in the image while changing the color. By default, this option is enabled to maintain the overall tonal balance in your image.

Move the Cyan/Red, Magenta/Green, or Yellow/Blue slider toward a color that you want to add to the image; drag the slider away from a color that you want to subtract from the image. The values displayed above the sliders, show the color changes for red, green, and blue channels. These values can range from ‑100 to +100. You can directly view the adjustments being applied to your image while moving the sliders.

Change color balance using Photo Filter

You can access the Photo Filter option from any of the following locations:

  • In the Adjustments panel, click the Photo Filter icon () icon.
  • Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter . Click OK in the New Layer dialog box.
  • You can also choose Image > Adjustments > Photo Filter . However, this method applies destructive adjustments to the image layer and discards image information due to which you cannot restore the original image.

Once you select the Photo Filter option, do the following:

  • Filter : For a preset filter, select the Filter option and choose one of the presets from the drop-down list.
  • Color : For a custom filter, select the Color option. Click the color square, and use the Adobe Color Picker to specify a color for a custom color filter.

How to use colors in the interior?

Designers considered that red color is the perfect shade for making accents in the interior. This powerful color activates and even stirs consciousness. It should be applied in balance with calm tones.

Purple is a derivative of red. It is the color of creative people and promotes intellectual work. Purple in the interior must be used in reasonable doses, leaving quiet zones for rest of the eyes in the house.

Is it risky to combine these colors?

No! A deliberate approach gives the original result. Let’s recall the rule of combination: it is better to combine colors that have a related origin. Red and purple – just what you need.

Look at these pictures. That is how red can be used in the interior. You can try to repeat it in your apartment.

For the harmonious application of these two colors in the design, be sure to consider three important rules.

  • High-quality lighting. Bright light transmits colors clean and saturated. In addition, these shades visually reduce the room, and lighting saves the situation.
  • Add a neutral tone. The combination of bright colors creates an ebullient atmosphere in the house. To make a healthy balance use white or gray color. They both combine well with red and purple.
  • Minimum of details. Unless, of course, you do not want to repeat the Indian interior. As a rule, when the main zest of the interior is the color choice, the furniture and decorative elements must be as simplest as possible to avoid variegation and bad taste.

How and where to apply the purple color in the interior? The photo will tell you.

Apartment Theory

The International Commission on Illumination (abbreviated CIE) defined a CIELAB color space or l*a*b* that labels color axes as red, yellow, green, and blue. As per the l*a*b*color space, the opposite nature of the colors is based on contrasts and afterimages. The opposite colors are red-blue and yellow-green.

An afterimage is an image that the eye continues to see for a few seconds, even when we draw our focus away from an object. The afterimage is an inverted view, i.e., 180 degrees from the hue of the observed color. It happens because the cells in our eyes are fatigued by constantly staring at the image, and when we look away, they suppress the color of the image we stared at revealing its opposite color to the brain for a few seconds. It’s the Apartment Theory that builds further upon the CIELAB theory.

A simple experiment can prove the point. Continue to stare at the purple square in the below diagram for about a minute. Then draw your attention to the white space around it. What do you see?

Probably you’ll see green-yellow squares. It indicates that the opposite of purple may be a mix of green and yellow colors.

Theoretical Differences

Early color theorists have ordered colors in many different ways. For example, in one color ordering system, the opposite of green was yellow, and the opposite of purple was sky blue.

In another system proposed in 1810, the opposite of purple was green. Goethe proposed a system in which the opposite of green was red and the opposite of purple was yellow.

The psychological ordering of colors is a relatively recent phenomenon. In this, the opposite of green is red, and the opposite of purple is yellow-green. It is widely accepted so far.

The Color Wheel Theory

Sir Isaac Newton first developed the color wheel in 1666. Many color theorists have suggested modifications, and differences of opinion continue to spark the debate.

The theory states three base colors red, blue, and yellow. These are the primary colors. No combination of colors can form any of these. All other colors draw from these three.

When you throw three beams of red, blue, and yellow lights with full intensity at a point on paper, you’ll get white color. But when you do the same with the lowest intensity, they’ll form black color. Intermediary intensities of the beams will result in different shades of grey.

Red and blue combine to form purple, blue and yellow form green, and a combination of red and yellow gives orange.

These are secondary colors, but there are also tertiary colors. Any base color combined with a secondary color gives a tertiary color like yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green & yellow-green.

Complimentary colors are opposite to each other as green and red, and red-purple and yellow-green.

The brain finds an image appealing when its different elements like colors are in harmony with one another. It creates order and balance in the visual experience. Pictures with parts that are not in sync with one another can be monotonous or chaotic, and the brain rejects both stimulations.

The color wheel theory affirms the old theory of yellow-green being the opposite color of purple.

The opposite of pink is blue-green, while the opposite of yellow is violet. Similarly, the opposite of blue, from the color wheel, is orange.

Final word. The knowledge of opposing or contrasting colors is important for everyone but especially for artists. The complimentary colors appear pleasing to the eye creating a sense of harmony and balance. Purple is an important color especially in-home décor, and clothing has yellow-green as its opposing color.
