Color Match Cult Lipsticks with Tina Davies Pigments
How many times has a client handed you their favorite lipstick and asked you to tattoo the exact same shade on their lips? Or, do you have clients who struggle to commit because they aren’t confident about which color works best for them? Wouldn’t it be great if you knew how to mix and create any color your client brought in, or even better, suggest cult-favorite lipstick colors that are loved by millions of women around the world?
One of the easiest ways to gain your client’s confidence and meet their expectations is to suggest lip colors they already know and love. Of course, healed results will vary based on your client’s undertone and lip tissue conditions, but color mixing with pigments is a great starting point to giving your client’s their dream lip color wishes.
In this blog post, I, along with our trusted The Collective instructors’ Jasmine Diebelius and Ramona Krusinskiene, will share the top cult-favorite lip colors and the EXACT recipe for creating them with Tina Davies and Perma Blend lip pigment colors.

Here’s step-by-step on how to color match featuring Charlotte Tilbury ‘Walk of No Shame’ Lipstick:
Step 1: IDENTIFY THE COLOR FAMILY
Examine the reference lipstick color’s undertone to identify the major color families. You can do this by applying it onto your client’s inner wrist AND swatching on white paper to see the color without the influence of skin.
The main color families are: pinks, orange/corals, reds, berry/mauves, and browns. Note: color families can be a mixture, i.e., a pinky-brown, reddish-pink, mauve-y pink, etc.
UNDERTONES
WARM: Orange/coral dominant
COOL: Cool blue-red, mauve or purple dominant
NEUTRAL: Neither warm nor cool dominant, a blend of both warm and cool
Charlotte Tilbury Walk of Shame is a deep, warm-dominant lip color that has cool rosy pink undertones.
Step 2: CHOOSE 2-3 PIGMENT COLORS TO WORK WITH
Select 2-3 pigments that have the same COLOR FAMILIES as the reference lipstick color for the mixture. Your options should contain:
1. The dominant lip color family
2. A secondary lip color family
3. Optional: a color to intensify or lighten, darken the mixture

Series 3
Rublev Colours Violet Hematite is a deep reddish purple hue that tints toward subtle violets when mixed with white. It is useful in flesh tints, shadows and its purple bias makes good grays. Rublev Colours Violet Hematite is formulated using pure natural ground hematite (Colour Index Name Pigment Red 102) that is absolutely permanent and very opaque. This beautiful earthy red violet is cooler than other red iron oxide earths, such as Venetian red or Sartorius red.
Every pigment is capable of yielding two distinct hues according to whether it is painted transparently or solidly mixed with white. The effect of using Violet Hematite painted thinly transparent and in solid color extends the range of hues accessible with it. Try rubbing a little Violet Hematite on a white surface, mixed with oil or a painting medium, sufficiently thinned to show the white surface through it. You get a purple lake hue. Now take the same color and mix a little white paint with it and paint it solidly across the thin paint. It is quite a different color. The shift is more dramatic in Violet Hematite than in many other colors. The explanation for these color differences was observed by Harold Speed (1987), “All colors are made warmer when painted over light grounds transparently, and all colors are made colder when mixed with white.”
Rublev Colours Violet Hematite is ground in linseed oil without the use of any stearates or other additives that affect the behavior of the pigment in oil. The pale linseed oil used to make this color is well aged and refined to provide higher levels of reactivity and oxidation than raw oil. The consistency is a smooth, thick, rich color that brushes long” yet holds its shape remarkably well. When the color is brushed out it readily flows with the brush, but when the brush is lifted it remains in place, staying put.

Drawdown Note: The scan of the “drawdown” (left) contains a pre-mixed paint film of 6 mil (0.006 inch) thickness applied to a standard test card for the purposes of examining color consistency, opacity and other qualities. The drawdowns show the color full strength (mass tone), on the left, and mixed in a 1:2 ratio with titanium white on the right. The bottom area of the drawdowns is scraped to show undertones.
Note: The color swatch was created using a thin tint mixed with an equal part of linseed oil (left), solid thick application (middle), and a solid tint mixed with an equal amount of titanium dioxide (right) applied on acrylic primed canvas. All pictures of color swatches in this web site are only approximations of the actual color of the oil paint. We have taken every care to match the color in these pictures on calibrated color monitors to the actual color. However, because of the wide variance in color monitors the results you get may vary.
