I Coloured My Hair And It Went Orange. Why?

One of the most common colouring challenges that colourists encounter is unwanted warmth.

It happens often enough that there are more than 5 million results for the Google search ‘dyed hair blonde turned orange’.

Why does hair turn orange?

Hair colour is a combination of various colour pigments, including the visible colour and underlying colour. The darker your natural colour, the more pigment it contains.

All hair has red within its base colour. Black hair has a large quantity of dark red base pigment, while brunettes and blondes have an orange base pigment.

When you lighten your colour, you reveal pigments which usually are not visible in hair. They are all predominantly red or orange. The cool-toned colour pigments within your hair are the smallest and they are the first to be lifted out of your hair during the lightening process. The warmer (red and orange) molecules are larger than cool colour molecules, so they are the last to be lifted out of hair.

Natural contributing pigment is the varying degree of warmth exposed during the lightening process.

As hair lightens, melanin is removed in order of the size of the molecule, which ranges from darkest to lightest, and as a result the underlying tones are exposed. The brassy/reddish/yellow colours are the largest colour pigments, and the most difficult colour pigment to remove, which is why all colour always gets warmer when it is lightened.

The natural pigment left in the hair at the desired level is referred to as Natural Contributing Pigment (NCP).

As all NCP is warm, typically the best option to manage unwanted warmth is to select a cool colour which will neutralise warmth. All our colours are identified by their colour level and tone on our colour chart and on the colour product pages:

Understanding and accounting for NCP is critical in correct colour selection for colouring, and NCP must be considered to achieve a successful colour outcome.

Your hair turns brassy/orange when you lighten it because the warm colour molecules are the last to be lifted during a lightening process.

For a successful, balanced lighter colour outcome, you need to first lift out all the warm colour pigments.

How many bottles will I need?

If you have short hair or are just looking to top up your colour, 1 bottle will do the job. We would recommend 2 bottles for lighter colours on short hair just so you can fully saturate each strand. 2 bottles for mid length hair – you need that full saturation and all important smooshing of the colour on your hair! Longer hair will need around 3-4 bottles to make sure every strand gets an even dose of colour.

Our bottles of semi-permanent are 100ml

Customise your colour?

Peacock Blue has a blend of both blue and green tones so add Blue Jade or Pine Green to tip the colour either way. Sapphire is a popular choice for creating deep navy root blending out to Peacock Blue on the ends.

Step By Step Guide

As with all of our shades, the lighter the base, the more vibrant the result! To get the best results, we recommend using our High-Lift Bleaching Kit. Use this shade straight from the bottle on pre-lightened, bleached blonde hair – check out our swatch guide and do a strand test to get an idea of the result you are going to get. This rich scarlet red will still create a deep red shade if your hair is light brown or darker.

HOW TO REMOVE BRASSY TONES FROM BROWN HAIR

Brassy, tawny tones are a common problem for blondes, but what about brassy brown hair? If you’ve recently gone to the dark side or you’re a natural brunette, you might have spotted some unwanted red or orange hues in your hair. Luckily, there are ways to prevent and fix brassy brown hair with a few simple hair care tips and product swaps.

Brassy brown hair has red and orange tones. This brassiness appears in colour-treated brown hair, and these unflattering red and orange undertones appear in your base colour over time.

When brown hair is lightened – for example, if you have balayage or ombré hair – the melanin which gives your hair its natural brunette hue is stripped, which leads to these unwanted warm tones becoming more visible.

What does brassy brown hair look like?

Brassy brunette hair often looks dull, lacklustre, and it’s easy to spot overwhelming red and orange tones which ‘clash’ with brown hair.

Just as a purple shampoo neutralises brassy tones on blondes, using a blue shampoo on brown hair neutralises orange and red tones for brunettes. Blue shampoos contain blue or violet pigments; when you wash your hair with blue shampoo, these pigments are deposited onto your hair strands, and help to counteract brassy tones.

Use our Blue Crush Shampoo and Blue Crush Conditioner to get rid of those orangey, reddy hues, and reveal cooler-toned brown hair. These brass-fighting brunette superheroes hydrate, care for and nourish brown hair, and contain a tri-dye blend of blue, purple and teal dyes to knock out stubborn brassy, copper tones.

How to use blue shampoo and conditioner

  • Start with thoroughly wet hair, ensuring it’s saturated from roots to ends.
  • Dispense a small amount of blue shampoo into your hand. The amount needed will depend on the length and thickness of your hair.
  • Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp and work it through your hair – pay special attention to areas prone to brassiness.
  • Let the shampoo sit on your hair for a few minutes. This allows the blue pigments to work on neutralising any unwanted brassiness.
  • For more intense results and to combat stubborn brassiness, leave the shampoo on your hair for up to five minutes.
  • Rinse your hair with cool water. Make sure all the shampoo is completely washed out.
  • Follow up with a blue conditioner or hair mask to replenish moisture and elasticity.
  • Use colour-protecting shampoos and conditioners: Our Brilliant Brunette range is designed to maintain your best-ever brunette, and reveal your hair’s multi-dimensional tones. This range is designed for natural or colour-treated hair to help seal in moisture and protect against colour fading.
  • Avoid overwashing: Washing your hair too frequently can strip away colour and natural oils, potentially leading to brassiness. Try to wash your hair every 2-3 days, or as needed.
  • Rinse with cool water: After shampooing and conditioning, rinse your hair with cool water. This helps to seal the hair cuticle, which can help maintain colour vibrancy.
  • Limit heat styling: Excessive heat styling can accelerate colour fading. Use heat styling tools on the lowest setting necessary – and if you can’t go without them, use our Heat Defeat Protecting Spray to protect your strands from heat damage.
  • Protect your hair from UV and chlorine damage: UV rays from the sun and chlorine from swimming pools can lead to colour fading and brassiness. Wear a hat or use a UV-protectant spray for your hair when spending extended time outdoors.
  • Don’t skip dye days: If you have your hair coloured at the salon, schedule regular touch-up appointments to keep your colour looking fresh. If you dye your hair at home, make sure you’re dyeing your hair as often as you need to to hide root regrowth and diminish brassiness.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner: Applying a leave-in conditioner can help provide an extra layer of protection against environmental factors that contribute to colour fading and brassiness.
