The aim of the present article is to reconsider the interpretation of the Greek word halourgos (ἁλουργός) and its relation to textiles and purple dye by reinvestigating its recordings in Greek epigraphy and the papyri, as well as comparative examples from Greek literary sources, in the period from the fourth century bc to the seventh century ad — thus combining the source material from ancient Greece and the Greek-speaking part of the Roman world. This will illustrate the wealth of information one can get from the exploration of one single word: not only on the significance and appearance of textiles and garments in the ancient world from Greece to Egypt, but also on the diversity of colours and the subtleties in their use and terminology.

TREASURES FROM THE SEA. Sea-silk and Shell purple dye in antiquity

The present article seeks to clarify whether we can associate certain dyes with specific colour terms by juxtaposing the information we have of the purple colour of textiles in sanctuaries from selected written sources with our knowledge of ancient dyes. This will clarify the possible appearance of the textiles dedicated in the Greek sanctuaries in the second half of the first millennium BC, their colour and which dyes were used to obtain them.

My examination of the textual evidence for purple dyeing in late Bronze Age Syria and Mesopotamia highlights a disconnect between the written sources and the physical remains of colored textiles recently unearthed at Qaṭna. By charting the relationship between developments in the dyeing industry against wider economic forces in this period, this paper addresses the impact of Bronze Age technologies on the evolution of Akkadian color language.

The materiality of purple dye production and use in Cyprus and the Aegean from Prehistory to the Late Roman period ».
