This design was painted on an old recipe book holder which had previously been varnished, so I sanded it back to dull the varnish and painted directly onto the surface.

1. Trace on the outside outline only and base in Black. Allow to dry and transfer the remainder of the pattern.

2. Paint in the border with Moss Green. Paint a thin Black line on the outside of the border.

3. Leaves – Base in Pine Green, float Moss Green on the top edge. Black + Pine Green vein. Small Leaves – brush mix Moss green mixed with a touch of Rose Pink.

3. Watermelon – Start at the rind, doubleload your brush with Pine Green and Moss Green and paint a line on the outside edge. Reload your brush with Moss Green and White and working in, paint another line. Go over these lines to soften the colour. The colour should be darker at the edge of the rind and becoming lighter in towards the flesh. Pick up more White with a flat brush and scumble (slip slap) in towards the centre picking up small amounts of Rose Pink as you go. You may need to do this a couple of times. Allow to dry then scumble a thin coat of Napthol Crimson, starting from the centre of the straight edge working out towards the rind. Seeds – Carbon Black teardrops form the seeds. Allow to dry and float a tiny amount of White for the shine.

5. Cherries – Base in Rose Pink. Allow to dry then repeat with Napthol Crimson mixed with Burgundy. Float Burgundy mixed with a small amount of Black around the outside of the cherry, and at the base of the stem. Dry brush Napthol Crimson across the centre of the cherry. Paint a thin crescent of Aqua mixed with a small amount of White to the top. Repeat around the bottom with Vermilion mixed with a small amount of White. The shine is a very small float of White. Stems are Pine Green, overstroked in the centre area with Moss Green.

6. Strawberries- Base in Rose Pink, allow to dry and repeat with Napthol Crimson. Float Burgundy / Black at the bottom. Stipple or dry brush a tiny amount of Turners yellow in the centres of the strawberries. Repeat with a smaller amount of White for the shine. Float a tiny amount of Burgundy and Black to form the seed depressions. Inside the depressions place a tiny teardrop of Moss Green for the seeds. Paint a thin crescent of Aqua mixed with a small amount of white to the top. Repeat on the bottom with Vermilion mixed with a small amount of white.

Paint the hull with small straight strokes of Pine Green side loaded with Moss Green.

7. Blossom – Double load a flat brush with Warm White and Moss Green and paint pivot strokes, keeping the Moss Green towards the centre of the blossom. Pull the lines out from the centre with Black Green.

Scatter dots of Turners Yellow and Black.

8. Lettering – Base each letter in Rose Pink. Mix Rose Pink / Turners Yellow / White and use this mix to dry brush 1/3 down from the top. Dry brush Napthol Crimson 1/3 up from the bottom. Outline with Black.
