What is a pumpkin paint and wash station?

It’s the fall activity they most look forward to, the one that kicks off the season.

Pumpkin paint and wash means we’ve finally arrived in Autumn, and they can have another go at an activity they’ve been loving since 2016. You read that right. 2016.

For eight fall seasons, my kids have painted and washed pumpkins and it hasn’t gotten old yet.

Two bins on a patio. One is full of water. The other has pumpkins, paint, and paintbrushes.

Supplies

  • Storage containers: these are 41 quart bins from Target
  • Pumpkins
  • Washable kid paint: this is my personal favorite
  • Paint brushes: I had a big size brush and small size brush
  • Muffin tin: Best way to give kids paint
  • Scrubbing brushes

Pretty easy going supply list. I like to keep supplies to a minimum – no need to get super fancy. Everything here except for the pumpkins and the scrub brushes are on my main activity supply list.

A child leans over into a bin to paint a white pumpkin with blue paint. A child adds blue polka dots to a pumpkin she is painting green.

The how-to

I grabbed two bins for this activity: one for the pumpkins and paint, the other for the water. You can absolutely go without a bin for the pumpkins and paint. I was trying to keep things a little contained and help keep the pumpkins from rolling away.

In the second bin, I put a bunch of scrubbing brushes in with water. No soap in the water today – hose water works just fine to remove washable kid paint from slick pumpkin skin.

Remember when you are setting up an activity: don’t get hung up trying to recreate the activity exactly as I did it. Work with what you have and what makes sense for your family/environment.

Two painted pumpkins sit by a third unpainted pumpkin. Paint and brushes are in the background.

Bradford Greenhouses Garden Gallery, just outside Barrie on County Road 90, hosted a free pumpkin painting event for kids on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The event collected non-perishable food items to be donated to the local food bank.

The fundraiser proved to be quite popular, as the lineup to get a turn at the art tables extended all the way to the entrance.

Liliana Aguiar, 9, had a plan going into the event.

“I’m making a cat pumpkin,” she told BarrieToday. “I’m making it kind of colourful — purple, pink and blue. I’m going to put it outside beside my garage.”

For 12-year-old Carson Hooey, his artistic style is to “probably (use) just a mix of colours, probably blue and pink,” which he says are his favourite colours.

His six-year-old sister, Taelyn, went with a more stylistic approach.

“I’m going to mix these two (colours) and then make dots,” she said.

Her plan was to place her work of art at the front door for everyone to see on Halloween night.

The next event on the schedule for Bradford Greenhouses Garden Gallery is the The Great Canadian Outdoor Show on Oct. 21 and 22 at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

That event is dedicated to fishing, hiking, boating and much more, according to their website.
