There is a long tradition of viewing cherry blossoms, sakura, when they bloom. Here, a beautiful woman composes a poem about them, by the light of a stone lantern, wearing a kimono with a cherry blossom pattern. While the flowers would usually be the center of attention, here they shimmer out of the shadows.
The artist is Katsushika Oi, the daughter of famed artist Hokusai Katsushika. She collaborated with her father and worked for him when he was older but was also respected for her talent.
