Owls, owls everywhere: 1970s trend makes a comeback

With our eyes glued to the Angry Bird video game app, some of us might not realize that another bird has swooped into the pop-culture mix.

Hooo, hooo else has noticed that the owls have been gathering – and multiplying? They stare out at us from their roosts on T-shirts, jewelry, stationery, toys, dishes …

“People are crazy about birds in general,” says Peggy Merrill, a buyer for the Bibelot shops. “Owls are a subset of that.”

This trend, like so many others, is recycled.

“The 1970s called,” one hoot of a headline announced. “It wants its owl back.”

(Remember the macrame?)

Owls have fascinated humans through history, says Laura Erickson, bird advocate and author; perhaps this is because of the bird’s humanlike posture and forward-facing eyes.

“Their features appear more human-like than other birds,” Erickson said.

Erickson also has a theory on why the owl is especially popular now: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” was released earlier this year.

“I always get a big uptick of questions about owls right after a Harry Potter movie comes out, and it hangs on for a while,” says Erickson, who maintains a page on her website called “The Owls of Harry Potter.”

This isn’t magic, says Sara Rogers, a trend expert for Mall of America; it’s retail.

“The big screen and the small screen are influencers of street fashion,” Rogers said. “With ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ we saw skulls and bones everywhere.”

Of course, before the movies, there were the “Harry Potter” books: Hedwig, Harry’s Snowy Owl, flew into our imaginations in the late 1990s. The “Harry Potter” craze peaked in 2007, with the publication of the seventh and final book in Rowling’s series.

“I think it’s been owls (as the ‘it’ bird) since 2007,” Merrill said. “The owl is still important. People are looking for owls, they ask about them. I don’t have the faintest idea why they are still so strong, I just know that people love them.”

People who shop at Bibelot really love the owl knit hat ($36.95) and the owl knit mittens.

“We are out of the mittens,” Merrill said just before Halloween. “They’re knitting more for us in Peru right now.”

Rogers went birdwatching recently – at Mall of America.

“I stopped by the Afternoon Store – it’s known for having a variety of novelty items and household goods,” Rogers said. “I asked, ‘You guys have any owls?’ They said, ‘We have a whole section!’”

Some of the owls she spotted there and elsewhere:

— Owl salt-and-pepper shakers

— Owls adorned with sequins

Local artists are inspired by the image, too.

“When the owl started trending, I instantly loved it,” says Julie Meyer, a Minneapolis artist who sells her handmade handbags and purses, lunch bags and iPad sleeves via her Etsy online shop.

The owl trend led to Meyer reflecting on a 1970s icon.

“The owl on the red-and-purple gingham oilcloth iPad sleeve is obviously inspired by the Red Owl grocery store owl, my favorite owl,” she said.

This owlish trend has been called “Hoot Couture.” Rogers thinks the name fits.

“Marc Jacobs had owls in his 2009 collection,” she said. “Critters have been used throughout history in fashion – think of the Cartier panther. H&M just got in a new shipment of owl necklaces and they are known for fast fashion, so I think it has some staying power.”

JUST THE WAY THEY ARE

There are no sequined owls in Erickson’s new book, “Twelve Owls,” a collaboration with artist Betsy Bowen that was published last month by the University of Minnesota Press.

Instead, Bowen’s realistic drawings and paintings are paired with Erickson’s words, which introduce us to Minnesota’s 12 owl species: Among them, the Northern Saw-Whet, our state’s tiniest owl, barely 8 inches from head to tail; the Short-Eared Owl, whose eggs and chicks are terribly vulnerable due to its ground-level nests in dwindling habitats; and the Northern Hawk Owl, a curious owl that is known to be quite tolerant of wildlife photographers.

“Because owls are featured so much in popular culture, it’s nice to make sure people understand the reality of them and not just the cartoon or Harry Potter versions,” Erickson says. “I wanted to communicate that owls are fascinating on their own terms.”
