Owl design painted on wood

In the fall, I taught a sex-ed class called Our Whole Lives (OWL) to preteens at our church. When the class ended, I wanted to make each of the kids a heartfelt gift to remind them of our time together. I had the idea to make owl key chains and I devised a way to cut wood slices for this easy craft! These hand-painted owl key chains were well received and fun to make.

Friends I’ve got a DIY Wood Owl for this month’s Power Tool Challenge! Monthly I get together with some great blogging friends to create some fun projects using power tools. This month had a frightful theme. My cute DIY Wood Owl might not be too scary but he’s perfect for your fall / Halloween decor.

My husband came up for the plans for this cute guy!

Wood Owl Supplies

Here’s what you need: (this contains affiliate links for your convenience)

2 ~ six foot red stained fir fence pickets

Nailer (although you can just use a hammer and nails)

Start by cutting the boards in half and lining them up next to each other, similar to what you see in this photo…

You can see the top outer pieces are slightly taller and the center two pieces are slightly lower… this makes cutting the ears easier and it makes for cute feet.

Take your 1x2x6 and cut it in half and use it to hold the boards together. This is where we used the nailer.

We used a triangle to create the angles for the ears, marked them with a pencil and used a jigsaw to cut them.

We made two small triangle cuts on the sides to define the head.

Then I created a template with cardboard to create the angle for the wings. Trace it with a pencil, flip it over to trace the other side (so they’ll match) and trace again. Use your jigsaw to cut.

To draw the owl face I started by creating the triangle at the top of his head. I just used a ruler to continue the ear line.

I used a plate, bowl and cup to create the circles for the eyes.

Then I used a ruler to draw the nose. I started with a pencil and then traced over everything with a black paint pen.

Then used acrylic paint to fill in the eyes and nose.

This owl is a tall guy and perches nicely on the porch. He’s a fun addition.

I printed out a cute sign and hung it around his neck with twine. Happy Owl-o-ween!

A grand view of life

When you visit the University of Oxford’s Natural History Museum its a job to know where to look – at the marvellous exhibits? Or at the magnificent architecture? In this painting you’ll spot a dodo, some dinosaur footprints, the swifts that nest in the tower, a dinosaur skeleton and so much more! My favourite bit is the frog in the jar. What’s your’s? The title comes from Charles Darwin’s book ‘The Origin of Species’ in which he wrote of his theory of evolution by natural selection: “There is grandeur in this view of life. “ The print is last one of a limited edition (of 4) hand-made drypoint tinted with watercolour – 450mm x 700mm.
