Ideas for painting leaves on canvas

  1. Paint 2 coats of paint onto the canvas. Be sure to let the first coat dry completely before applying the next.
  2. Apply a generous coat of Mod Podge to the canvas, and let it dry completely.
  3. Place your leaves onto the canvas in any shape or format you’d like. TIP: trim the stems down, since they do not adhere nicely to the canvas like the leaves will.
  4. Lay a piece of parchment paper of top of a leaf. Press an iron (with NO STEAM, set on medium-high heat) over the parchment paper to reactivate the Mod Podge, causing the leaf to stick to the canvas. Only press a leaf or two at a time.
  5. Apply another generous coat of Mod pPdge to secure the leaves completely on the canvas.

DIY Fall Canvas Stenciled with Real Leaves

I love unique autumn crafts, and this fall canvas project definitely qualifies! Use spray paint and leaves to make fun, seasonal wall art.

Skills Required: None. You’re going to be spray painting, which is fine for people who have never crafted before. Just remember to use light coats of the spray paint and do it in a well ventilated area.

I don’t know about you, but I am SO ready for fall and fall crafts! I just love the cooler weather and the colorful fall leaves. I decided to bring a little bit of fall into the house with this leaf-stenciled canvas. I am so excited to share this leaf craft with you!

Instead of using an actual leaf stencil, I used leaves as a reverse stencil of sorts. These leaves are fake, but I think it would be really neat to collect real ones when they start to fall off the trees. All of the different types and sizes would be beautiful!

This is a great craft to make at the beginning of autumn, and then you can keep it up with your Thanksgiving decor. That makes it a winner for me. Learn how to make it below.

DIY Fall Canvas

To make this easy fall craft, you will need:

  • burlap canvas
  • spray paint (gold, blue & red)
  • leaves
  • small rocks

Place a few leaves on top of the burlap canvas, and weigh them down with rocks so they don’t blow away. Make sure that none of the rocks are touching the canvas, or you will see their outlines instead of the leaves.

Spray paint over the top of the canvas and leaves with the gold spray paint. You want to spray down on the leaves and try not to get any paint under them.

Add more leaves and spray paint blue. Then add a third and final layer of leaves.

Spray paint red.

And my favorite part… take off the leaves to see what you’ve got! I love how the edges of the leaves show little bits of the other colors.

You can paint the colors in whatever order you like or even use different colors altogether. The possibilities with this really are endless.

First of all, thanks for always making it so easy to follow your link in profile. Makes navigating to instructions so easy and convenient when I only have a few minutes to check my Instagram feed.

I love this! You have inspired me to make a runner for my Thanksgiving dinner. I want to use this technique on some fabric I already have with copper, orange, and black. I plan on using fabric I don’t care about so I don’t need it to be washable. I wonder if there is a way to make it washable, hmm. may have to do some research. Anyway, thanks for all your wonderful ideas and great walk tthrough.

When fall break comes around it can be hard to keep your kiddos occupied. Keep them busy by doing a little creative art.

That’s why I did a roundup of The Best Simple Kids Crafts and Boredom Busters. Any parent would agree that it would be nice to have things for their kids to do, especially to keep them from getting bored. Being completely honest here, bored kids are no fun.

DIY Mod Podge Fall Leaf Art

WHY I LOVE THIS PROJECT

I love this project because it doesn’t take much make – I only had to buy the canvas. I’m also able to get my kids involved from beginning to end. We took a nature walk to collect the leaves, which gets them outside, moving, and on the lookout for “special” leaves for their artwork.

They can do much of what’s needed, except the ironing (depending on the age and development level of your child, of course). It’s also something that will become a keepsake once finished!

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • Paintbrush– I bought this bulk pack of 1-inch brushes, and I use them on SO many projects!
  • Mod Podge – matte finish

***NOTE: Use your leaves right away so they do not dry out. Dried leaves do not adhere well to the canvas with Mod Podge.
