Update the paint job on a truck

18 мар. 2016 в 15:43

SCS Software

Customization throughout the development of the game has constantly evolved. With new tabs for customization, new parts and possibilities, truck customization is undeniably one of the many focuses of SCS Software, which is absolutely understandable, seeing the importance of this mechanic in the success of ETS2. There is however, one mechanic that has pretty much stood the same since the release of ETS2: customization around paint. Sure, 1.38 has seen the implementation of a new, better paint color picker, but it only allows for better color choosing.
This thread will focus on a reform for paint customization, to make it more flexible, diverse, up to date, and perhaps, financially interesting for SCS. Note that the suggested changes are only a basic maquette of what I, the writer, think would be adequate for most players.
The features suggested in this thread are a conglomerate of multiple ideas. In no way am I asking to make each one a base game feature.

2. The problems with the current paint system

Most people will agree that most paints aren’t quite useful, realistic or esthetically up to date. Moreover, choices are slim. Unless the player pays for a DLC averaging 1.5€ for very specified paints with often very little available customization choices, you are stuck with old designs from 2012 that were good back then, but not anymore. On top of that, players can only choose between regular paint or metallic paint, but most times, complex paint jobs do not leave the player any choice.
So, to sum up, the current paintjob system is:
1. Not useful for simulation and unsuited for detailed builds
2. Too few & outdated designs
3. Lack of creative freedom for players
4. Relatively expensive paint job DLCs

3. Proposed solution

In order to answer all these problems, a new system has to be imagined. While thinking about the new improved system, many constraints were taken into accounts. SCS is a company. In order to do something it has to be motivated by a direct or indirect reward. On top of that, the suggestion of reforming the paintjob system must be easy enough to be considered a doable project. And finally, it must fit SCS Software’s philosophy regarding premium or free content.

3.1. Paint customization

Ideally paint jobs should be provided with more options. More precisely, more paint jobs, but also more paint types. The proposed solution illustrated below gives the player the ability to choose the type of paint for each different colour. (Regular, metallic, matte…). Some paint jobs could be made by the community and sold through the steam community market or earnable by playing the game.

You can see every color of your paint and modify its type with the unfolding menu on the right side.

The problem with more or too much freedom on the looks of a vehicle are the abuses (Profanities, bad words, NSFW content…). This issue is quite important to consider because of the image SCS would like to project towards the brands featured inside of ETS2. Brands like SCANIA, DAF, Krone would not appreciate to see their products covered with edgy content. The best answer (I thought about) is to make stickers that can be placed in predefined areas.
These stickers, based on unlicensed content could range from in game company logos (LKW, EuroGoodies…), Player owned company logos, fictional companies, Abstract patterns, Special cargo related or Basic shapes (Lines, rectangles…), all with their own style and theme.
In order to reduce endless customization menus, they should be in some sort of pack. Essentially, each pack has different stickers centered around a theme like a company name and logo for instance and each truck can have up to 2 or 3 packs at the same time. This will avoid trucks covered in stickers looking like stock cars and potential lags. These sticker packs will be earned through the steam community market and in game missions.

After choosing you paint job, a sub-menu appears to choose sticker pack. These sticker packs will then be available to be placed on your truck.

In this case, I have chosen the sticker pack ‘Balkan Loco’, a company in ETS2. I can choose to put my stickers wherever the game allows me to.

Now, you might ask yourself, how can we do all this without making it too heavy on SCS, especially the art team?
Well, I might have a fix that could fit with SCS Software’s philosophy.

3.3. Steam Community Market & economy

What better way to implement something the community likes by implementing what they have made themselves and is popular.
The idea would be: Artists and creators from the community enter sticker packs and paintjobs to a contest. The community votes for the best ones. The best ones are then moderated and added into the game. These paintjobs and sticker packs can then be obtained through missions in the game or on the steam community market.
You might ask, how do you create these items on the steam community market to be then distributed in the community? My best answer to this idea would be to give an item to each player who voted for the paintjob / sticker pack who won, or / and make the paintjob / sticker pack on the steam community market available for purchase from SCS themselves (perhaps for a limited amount of time?). This second idea is similar to the sale of keys in CS:GO where the developers regulate offer and prices.
This system would guarantee a constant income for SCS thanks to the commissions on community market items and the constant resale of items between players, but also reward the creator with a percentage of sales (if legally possible). Moreover, some events on world of trucks could reward participants with sticker packs and paint jobs (similar to how it was done for the Genoa bridge event). However, this system isn’t without its flaws. As discussed in the comments, games with similar systems have faced copyright issues from people stealing other people’s mods for profit. Of course, most issues are directed towards the person which stole the content rather the developer of the game, but this should be taken into account if SCS intends to consider a similar system.

To sum up, how would everything look like if the system was implemented in the game?

1. (Go on the community market and pick a paint job & sticker packs that you like)
2. Go in the game and choose your paint job then sticker pack(s) you think would suit your vision and likings
3. Change the color and type of your paint
4. Put the stickers on your truck and change their colour if possible
5. Enjoy

Here is a visual summary of the system in ETS2.

As cited previously, the suggestion allows:
More diversity, freedom and customization with paint jobs and stickers
New visual possibilities for everyone’s taste with stickers
Content for both premium players and non premium player (Sticker packs and paint jobs earned by playing. )
Stickers work on a similar mechanics as the current customization system (How to place them, steam inventory. )
New content is frequent, timely and adapted to the community’s needs thanks the voting system
Once the system is implemented, very little work is needed to keep it going, the community makes most of the work
The suggestion could be rather inexpensive, except perhaps at the beginning to set up the system
This system respects SCS Software’s vision on premium content, or even more since steam items can be resold. An unsatisfied customer can get rid of its unwanted items without impairing SCS financially.

There aren’t many cons that I can think of right now except perhaps:
New ingame mechanics which might be hard to implement into ETS2 but could be worked around if more research is done (Sub-customization menu)
Due to the high amount of truck models, some paint jobs and sticker packs might not be compatible with every model.
Some changes asked are rather drastic. This might sartle the modding community to adapt to the new changes.
As the discussions below the thread suggest, the contest to add community made content into the official game can potentially be a legal and social quagmire.

In this section, I am going to show you capabilities of this new, improved system.

Here is an example using a fictional company for stickers.

Paint job only

Paint job with stickers. This model is inspired from the IRL company ‘Prestons of potto’. Yes, I took the real logo, but normally, the artist should make their own. I just didn’t have the capabilities to do it.

Another positive aspect of the system would be the addition of accent colours as paint jobs. A forgotten style within the current system.

I will add some more examples when I will have the time to edit them in photoshop.

Thank you for reading, do not hesitate to give your opinion in the poll, you opinion, positive or not matters!

only hiring people is with opening times, the repair and upgrade shops are open 24/7

odd btw that you can not do these things in your own garage even though when you look at how it is outfitted in the game you should be able to do most things there, heck with the big one you can even fuel up at your garage

I think that truck dealers are also with opening times, I had to sleep like 3 times to get a new truck lol. You can buy trucks 24/7 by buying online. It’s one of the options when you go to a dealer.

That is only after having bought 3 trucks already, but yes.

I can’t recall a whole compartement to paint a vehicle the size of a truck.. which is absolutely neccessary to do so. ever used a spraycan indoors? now imagine painting a semi. also it would not make much sense to have it either way, from a realism point of view, where as a fueling sation IMO might make more sense.

I understand what you mean and maybe paint jobs are indeed still given to specialists. However for any other job like repairing your engine and such the garage should be a place to go.

besides, with UFO’s flying around and spray planes sprauing at midnight I guess that little twist in realism wouldn’t really hurt that much right 🙂

Repairing such issues will help your vehicle receive the smoothest finish and highest possible gloss. At Maaco, our estimators examine your vehicle and suggest condition repairs. We offer affordable surface prep options that ensure your MAACOVER looks great. A little surface repair before the paint goes on can ensure it holds that gloss and shine for years to come.

STEP 3 – SURFACE SEALER

Have you ever noticed how some paint jobs fail to hold their shine? It could be a matter of that old paint mixing with the new, creating uneven color and gloss. Sealer plays that all-important role of establishing a barrier between the old and new paint. This ensures consistent color and a higher gloss throughout the entire painted surface. At Maaco, we offer 3 grades of sealer. The right choice is all about durability, and ultimately the amount of prep work needed for your particular vehicle. When it comes to the durability of your vehicle’s paint, sealer helps keep consistent shine long after the job is done.
