“I’ve done a few projects in the Niagara region and with each of the projects, I shared my story of how I kind of went from playing football to becoming an artist,” said Moore, a McMaster University alumnus and former running back for the BC Lions who was born in Jamaica, raised in Toronto and is now living in Niagara.

“Once they kind of realized that the Grey Cup was going to be in Hamilton and they were going to have the award ceremony in Niagara Falls, they were trying to find a way to incorporate all that together.”

The annual awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at Niagara Fallsview Casino’s Avalon Theatre at 6:30 p.m., followed by a concert by rapper/reggae artist Shaggy at the OLG Stage at Fallsview Casino at 9 p.m.

Moore, who played in the CFL from 2016 to 2020, said his piece, which he’s working on now, will be presented to the player who wins the Most Outstanding Player award.

“It’s going to be highlighting the most prestigious award of the night and I’m going to try my best to exemplify some of Niagara Falls, it being the 110th Grey Cup, which is a big deal, and the fact that it’s in Hamilton and obviously incorporate the teams involved,” he said.

Moore, who mainly focuses on acrylic painting with most of his work being on canvas or wood panels, said he was “always an artist at heart,” even when he was playing football.

“It’s something I always used as an outlet,” he said. “In 2019 is when I started to implement it into my season. When I would come home from practice, I would constantly paint. That’s when I really developed it more.”

Moore said he was excited when he was approached with the CFL Awards art project idea, adding he’s glad “we found a way to make it work.”

“It is really a full-circle moment, just being able to merge both worlds (football and art),” he said. “That’s what I’ve been mentioning when I’ve been having my art exhibits. I’ve had that chance to kind of walk away from football and step into my art world, but football has developed me as a person — both make me who I am, so being able to step back into a football space with my art … it’s special.”

A Grey Cup Festival in Hamilton will feature 40 local acts performing at Fan Central on James Street from Nov. 16 to 19. Country singer Carrie Underwood will perform Nov. 17 at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre, followed by Green Day performing at halftime during the Grey Cup game Nov. 19 at Tim Horton’s Field in Hamilton.

Free shuttle service between Hamilton and Niagara Falls is available at www.greycupfestival.ca/regional-transportation-service.

Jason Burgess, chief administrative officer for the City of Niagara Falls, said he pitched the art project idea to Hamilton Tiger-Cats and CFL officials when the municipality was approached to support Hamilton’s bid to host the Grey Cup.

“We have the pleasure of having the CFL player awards and to support Hamilton on the bid, we thought it was a nice, little unique token of Niagara Falls’ hospitality to put something unique into the program that was kind of Niagara Falls based,” he said.

Burgess said he gives “full marks” to the Tiger-Cats, City of Hamilton and Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Neil Lumsden for wanting to make this year’s Grey Cup festivities “more of a regional event.”

“It engages the whole community,” he said, adding Niagara Falls has the necessary hotel inventory to support such a “natural” partnership.

“People would have migrated someplace else (outside Hamilton) a little bit, so why not capitalize on that and really make it an event, so if you’re staying in Niagara Falls (or Hamilton), it’s easy for you to get back and forth.”
