MARION — It was a warm fall day at the Marion Art Center, where parents and children prepared to carve and paint pumpkins. But a few families who hadn’t left their pumpkins to warm up in the sun were in for a bit of a shock when carving.

“Ahh! It’s so cold,” said Kaylin O’Connor, as she dipped her hands into a pumpkin to take out its innards. “I should have worn mittens!”

After kids did most of the cold, messy work of scooping out the pumpkins, they took off for the face painting lines or boxes of doughnuts, or to play tag in the small yard that the Marion Art Center got the rights to this spring.

Parents stayed at the shady tables to talk and do much of the carving work. (The one exception was Graham Levenson, who had helped to carve his pumpkin the year before and did much of his carving on his own).

Eventually, the children returned to the table to paint the newly-carved pumpkins.

The carvers also discussed what to do with the seeds. One mother said that she had a delicious Portuguese recipe for pumpkin seeds.

O’Connor had other ideas, though. “I want to plant them and have hundreds of pumpkins,” she said.

Pour Painting Pumpkin Decorating

This project is all about fun and color! Lots and lots of bright, happy colors! I found the cutest white pumpkins the other day and immediately scooped some up as they were the perfect blank canvas for a fun painting project. Fall is the best time for some Pour Painting Pumpkin Decorating!

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE POUR PAINTING PUMPKIN DECORATING

white pumpkins (I bought mine at the grocery store) or craft white pumpkins
tempera paint- these are our favorite
cups or mason jars
paper (to put under pumpkin to catch drips)

Prior to introducing the activity set up an art station with a piece of paper on the table, one pumpkin per child, and tempera paints in individual jars with a small amount of water to make the paints a little more runny.

Now the fun begins! Pick a color and slowly start pouring on the pumpkin. Use as many colors as you like. It is fun to watch as the colors mix together and drip down the pumpkin. We love projects where we all start with the same supplies, but our results are always unique. Look at these colors!

Pour Painting Pumpkin Deocrating

We loved watching the colors swirl on the top and change each time a new color was added. That’s it! Let dry and you have a gorgeous Fall decoration.

I tried a similar project in my classroom last year, but my tempera paint flaked off once it was dry. Was there a certain brand that you used or did you do something else to keep it from flaking?
Thanks!

Hi Claire- we haven’t had any flaking. I used Crayola washable tempera paints.

Could pumpkins get more fun than this? These are wonderful, and would make a great gift for grandma. And even if grandma doesn’t live close enough to receive a pumpkin…you can still share it with her, with Keepy! It’s a family-friendly app for organizing and privately sharing all of your children’s masterpieces. Take a look: http://keepy.me
