Though we don’t get fireflies in the UK — that is, the species that glow brightly as they fly — our flying male glow worms do occasionally glow, and even more rarely will do so when flying. However, this is not easily seen, so any reports I receive of flying shining insects are invariably due to other insects illuminated by a beam of light. UK Glow Worm Survey
Afraid these are not glow worms — they don’t live in trees and are not seen in November. Most likely to be a laser decoration, which are increasingly common these days and trigger off many reports such as yours. Sorry! Robin

Did someone try to introduce Photinus pyralis? I guess they could even improve the biodiversity being more tolerant to urban environments and having a different niche compared to Lampyris noctiluca.

UK Glow Worm Survey
On 4 August 2012 I was sent a photo of a live Luciola splendidula specimen taken at Cuerden Country Park, near Preston, Lancs, by someone who had seen them flying and glowing. However, searches in subsequent years found nothing. The site was within sight of some houses, and my conclusion was that some live fireflies (possibly all male) had recently been brought back from a trip to Portugal or Italy and released. This must have happened many times in the past, and I expect that Victorian entomologists would have tried to do the same in their country estates, though without the advantage of air travel. Two male specimens of Lamprohiza splendidula, which is the firefly seen in the near Continent such as in Belgium, were found in a hedge in Leeds, Kent, in 1884. But as this thread suggests, casual reports of fireflies at night are probably all misinterpretati ons of other phenomena.

Amazing! Talking of other flying insects glowing I once saw what can only be described as a small (close) star blazing away as it flew at about chest height 10 or so meters in front of me.
I immediately ran over to find it was a woolly aphid that had caught some beams of the deep orange/ red evening sun shining through the shady side of some bushes. It looked incredible but can imagine scenes like this resulting in false reports of fireflies or even worse!!
