Snowman-Themed Classroom Arts & Crafts

It’s the time of year when snow falls and the temperatures dip. Keeping students engaged during the weeks and months of colder, darker weather can be a challenge. Use these snow-themed crafts, and decor ideas to make most of the winter season in your classroom.

If you can’t get outside and build a snowman, why not use some creative skills to build artistic snowmen indoors?

Egg Carton Snowmen

Get the creativity flowing with the use of some basic craft supplies and cardboard egg cartons. Cut the carton so that three of the cups are left and still attached — they will be the body of the snowman. Once you’ve painted the three stacked cups white, the snowmen are ready to decorate. Use the construction paper to create a hat and scarf, the pipe cleaners to make an orange nose, and add the googly eyes.

Additional details can be added with paint: buttons, a mouth, and decorations for the hat or scarf. See additional instructions and images here .

To make egg carton snowmen , you’ll need:

  • Cardboard egg cartons
  • Scissors
  • White paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Construction paper
  • Glue

Cotton Ball Snowman Ornaments

Start by taking the tops off of plastic ornament balls and ask kids to fill the ornaments with cotton ball until they are full. It might require the end of a pencil to push in the cotton balls into the ornament ball if the opening is small. Once filled with cotton balls, put the lids back onto the ornaments and use the rest of the craft materials to make the face of the snowman.

Use colored felt for a scarf and an orange carrot nose. Glue on the googly eyes, and hole punch construction paper to make the dots for a snowman mouth.

The last step is to let everything dry and then decide where to hang the snowman faces. Think outside the box for displaying the ornaments. They might look cute on a string or even hung from the ceiling. See additional instructions & images here .

To make cotton ball snowman ornaments , you’ll need:

  • Clear, plastic ornaments with a removable lid
  • Cotton balls
  • Googly eyes
  • Colored felt
  • Construction paper
  • Glue
  • Ribbon
  • A hole punch
  • Scissors

Snowman Paper Plates

Start by gluing two buttons as eyes and two buttons as rosy cheeks for the snowman face. Then use a paint brush to coat the areas around the eyes and cheeks with Mod Podge. Before the Mod Podge dries, sprinkle the plate with white glitter. Allow the glitter and Mod Podge to settle before using the puffy paint to draw on a mouth and nose. Be sure to let the puffy paint dry completely before moving the paper plate.

Hang using a hole punch and attaching string or by taping these lightweight products right to a bulletin board or doorway. See additional instructions and images here .

To make snowman paper plates , you’ll need:

Melted Snowman

Start by having kids paint a face onto the mashmallow-shaped foam using small brushes. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Use the white felt to have kids cut out a melted snowman shape. There is no perfect melted snowman, so give them an example and then let their creativity handle the rest.

Use black felt to make a hat, buttons, and even a scarf for the melted snowman. Brown felt can be used to make the stick arms. Using craft or tacky glue, have artists attach their snowman face to the white felt puddle. Then they can follow the same process to attach buttons, arms, and the hat anywhere on the white felt. See additional instructions and images here .

To make a melted snowman , you’ll need:

  • White felt
  • Marshmallow-shaped foam
  • Craft glue
  • Tempera paint
  • Small paint brushes
  • Scissors

Milk Jug Snowman

Use empty milk jugs to make happy, smiling snowman decorations with kids of any age. Use black cardstock circles to be eyes and mouth pieces for the snowman face. Glue them on using craft or tacky glue. Allow them to dry before moving on. Then create snowman earmuffs with a pipe cleaner and two pom-poms. Attach the pom-poms to the sides of the milk jug, in line with the snowman’s eyes.

The snowmen look great with battery-operated twinkle lights inside, or on their own sitting on a shelf or windowsill. See additional instructions and images here .

Snowman Gourd Painting Pattern for Christmas

Snowman Gourd Painting Pattern for Christmas

Make sure the bottom of the gourd is flat by gently sanding off. Please do any sanding outside and in a well-ventilated area.

Make sure the gourd is completely dried.

Take sand paper and gently sand the entire gourd. This step will loosen any “skin” that is not totally attached to the gourd. Wipe the gourd off with an old cloth to get rid of any excess dust.

Now take a 1″ foam brush and paint your snowman cream or white acrylic paint. This one is painted cream with white splatters, but a white snowman with crème splatters looks great too. You might need 2 coats here. (Hint-I usually hold the top of the gourd by the stem while painting and find a container like an empty Cool Whip or cottage cheese tub to set the gourd in when finished.) Let dry.

In the meantime, make a pencil stencil to transfer the features and lettering. Do this by taking a #2 pencil and rubbing this on the back of the paper pattern. Then take a small piece of tape and put on the top of the pattern shown here and place your design where you want this on the gourd. Then take an ink pen and press firmly on the lines of the design and this will transfer your image to the gourd. (This is better than carbon paper, which will leave a blue line.) You might want to cut your design into 2 pieces to fit easier on the shape of your gourd.

Paint teardrop eyes, eyebrows, and mouth with black acrylic paint and add white for a highlight in the eye. This gleam is great for your snowman. Add a black ribbon or your favorite color all the way around your snowman’s neck.

Add burgundy for cheek blush and also for nose. Add 3 holly berries and 2 leaves off to the left of the eyes.

Then do the lettering in black acrylic paint- “S is for Snowmen”. The “O’s” are painted black buttons (Or, you can use real buttons glued to the gourd here.). Take your time doing the lettering; have a fun time and do a good job. Use a liner brush right here.

Add 2 sets of 3 holly berries and the leaves on the second line of the wording. Add 2 leaves under the “O” on Snowman and 1 leave and berry over the “E”.

Then splatter the entire snowman with white paint to give the illusion of snow falling on your Snowman. Let dry and then spray or paint with clear sealer. I usually do 2 thin coats. Enjoy through the winter.
