5 Photos that will Convince You to Visit D.C. During Cherry Blossom Season
This past Spring was my first year experiencing the insanity and beauty that is D.C. during Cherry Blossom season. Over 1.5 million (yes I said million) people visit D.C. every year to see these beautiful trees. If you’re anything like me, you’re thinking “There is no way I am going anywhere with 1 million other tourists to look at some trees.” But here are 5 photos that will convince you to visit D.C. during Cherry Blossom season.
Timing your Visit
Peak bloom is hard to nail down each year, so it’s hard to plan ahead of time exactly when to visit. However, even if you don’t visit during peak bloom, the early stages of the blossoms are still lovely.
Less Crowds
The best place to take in the views and (if you’re lucky) avoid crowds is on the far side of the Tidal Basin, closer to the FDR Memorial. You’ll get amazing shots of the Jefferson Memorial and other visitors may not want to walk all the way around to that side. The crowds are a tiny bit less crazy on this side.
Hidden Gem
One place that is highly underrated and I would even say is a secret spot to see cherry blossoms is Dumbarton Oaks . This museum and garden is in Georgetown, and there is a $10 admission fee. But there are significantly less crowds, plus tons of other flowers and blooms to check out too.
Be Patient
Even with the overwhelming crowds, you can get some great shots of the cherry blossoms. The key is patience. I literally stood in the same spot for about 30 minutes waiting for the perfect gap in the crowd to get the above shot. And I repeated this for varying amounts of time all around the Tidal Basin on multiple days. It was totally worth it though, as I got some photos that I really love.
Sunset Photo Shoot
As if the cherry blossom weren’t gorgeous enough, try to visit the Tidal Basin at sunset at least once. The colors play off each other really well, and you may get lucky and have a lull in the crowds too.
