Tutorial on illustrating a uncomplicated barn

To create the hay, simply draw connected pointed shapes forming a curve within the space of the window.

How to Draw a Barn – Step by Step Guide

Farm animals have long been a common subject in drawings. What would make a better background for the farm animals than a barn?

A barn is an agricultural building most commonly seen on farms. A barn can be used for storing grain, hay, or straw and for housing livestock.

drawing barn in 9 easy steps

We have created a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a barn, summarized in 9 quick and easy steps.

What’s more, each instruction comes with an illustration which serves as your visual guide as you follow the steps one by one.

All you need is a piece of paper and a pen and you’re all set to start drawing a barn! Don’t forget to grab your favorite coloring materials too so you can color your drawing once it’s finished!

Have fun and use your creativity to draw a beautiful barn!

How to Draw a Barn – Let’s get started!

Start by drawing the barn from the top then work your way downwards to the bottom. Draw a wide inverted V-shaped line for the topmost part of the barn.

Afterwards, draw a diagonal line on each end-point of the V-shaped line that we drew just now.

A barn primarily consists of straight lines. So, feel free to use a ruler to help you draw straight lines quickly and easily. This also helps ensure that the barn is proportioned.

Step 2 – Create an Outline of the Barn

Draw a diagonal line on each endpoint of the lines we drew in the previous step. Then, draw a horizontal line at the bottom connecting both endpoints of the two diagonal lines.

When drawn correctly, it should look like the bottom half of a pentagon.

After finishing this step, the outline of the barn should be completed.

Painting A Barn – A beginner watercolor landscape lesson.

This lesson is a simple painting of a barn within its landscape. We will cover some wet in wet, some drybrush, and every sort of wash in between. We will also introduce an advanced concept, lost edges.

We begin with a very loose and easy sky. Then we define the horizon with trees and mountains. After that comes some trees which frame the barn and help to push it forward. After that its the barn itself with some huge contrasts. These big value changes definitely make it the obvious center of interest. Finally we paint in a loose and easy foreground with shadow which anchor the barn to its environment.

The colors are both warm and cool with warm predominating.

We will cover some wet in wet, some drybrush, and every sort of wash in between. Also introduced will be some elementary perspective. The compositional idea of masses, and the compositional idea of implied lines are also be introduced. Of course we will talk sky, meadow, trees and especially, light source and shadows

Sediments quickly offering a mottled or shimmery look to the final (wash)

A cool (purplish) blue.

A non sedimentary color settles out smoothly, theoretically yielding a uniform final (wash).

Actually Ultramarine Blue “flocculates” (gathers in clumps) so we only get a fairly smooth (wash)

Sadly, it’s the only purplish blue thats light-fast and available to artists.

Alizarin Crimson
( Quinacridone )

A cool (purplish) red.

A non sedimentary color settles out smoothly yielding a uniform finish (wash)

n fact, Alizarine Crimson (a very early man made pigment) lost favor when it was found non light-fast.

Today we replace it it with a better version of the same color called Quinacdridone Red.

Nevertheless, manufacturers still call it Alizerine Crimson.

Arylide Yellow Deep

A cool (greenish) yellow

A non sedimentary color settles out smoothly yielding a uniform finish (wash)

There is not an industry standard name for this color. I am offering the DaVincis Brand name.

Cool

I use mostly “Kolinsky” (Highest quality) red sable brushes. I also have some nylon brushes that are pretty amazing. They are on the high priced side of nylon brush prices.

Brushes do the actual painting. If the brush cannot do it ; neither can you. If you are a beginner, you should watch my videos All About Brushes.

Watercolor Brushes What to look for when buying them.

I use 140 pound cold pressed paper.

I buy “full sheets”. Everyone will know that means 22″ x 30″. They are actually a little oversized which is true for all “mold made” papers.

Heavier thicknesses than 140 pound are nice but more expensive. “Rough” as opposed to cold pressed is also nice.

“Arches” brand; actual spelled D’Arches by the manufacturer.

PALETTE Has Two Meanings

1) The selection of paints available to the artist.

2) The surface upon which the paints are stored and mixed.

In this case, the paint holder is a cut down ice cube tray. It stores, along with a wet sponge, in a zip lock bag. That keeps the paint fresh.

For a mixing surface I use a flat sheet of white plastic.

Another good one is clear plastic with white paper under it. A matte surface is preferable to a shiny one.
