How to draw shiny & reflective objects: Christmas bows, drawing tutorial

This 20-step colored pencil drawing tutorial teaches you how to approach drawing shiny and reflective surfaces with accuracy needed to convey realism.

In this demonstration you’ll learn to draw on colored paper (or toned drawing paper). While I worked on Canson paper for pastel drawing, I recently came across a much better choice – Canson Colorline papers. They are vibrant and sell in large sheets that you can subdivide into various sizes for your colored pencil drawings.

Because I draw each bow one by one, you can choose what color/bow you’d like to draw first. Draw just one Christmas bow or complete drawing them all! The choice is yours. This demonstration is for art students who have some experience drawing in graphite and colored pencil, and want to step up their game in realistic colored pencil drawing.

I suggest printing a large photo to work from and then follow the steps on the screen.

What you get in this digital, step-by-step demonstration:

How to shade on colored paper (Please use the SMOOTHEST SIDE of your colored paper using Canson Colorline or Mi-Teintes pastel paper).

How to pick the right colors for the job. This demonstration includes a color chart of the colors used, so you can match them with your colored pencils.

How to make good outlines to transfer them onto your colored paper.

Tips on where to begin shading and how to eliminate the pencil strokes.

Ornament Drawing Ideas for Christmas

Easy ornament drawing ideas, made with the help of an easy step by step tutorial.

A step by step tutorial for how to draw an easy Christmas Ornament, also available as a free download.

Some pretty ornament drawing ideas can happen with just the power of lines and patterns. It uses the technique that doesn’t draw the outside edge of the ornaments, it just implies it by lining up all the ends to fill the shape.

The easy way to create this look is just to draw a very light and very temporary pencil line, fill it with pretty marker patterns, and then erase.

I recommend this project as shown here for maybe grades 3 and up. They will more likely appreciate the subtle look that happens when you follow this process of not tracing the edge of the ornament.

If you want to try this with younger students, they would probably be happier to just draw the ornament outline and trace it with marker before filling it with patterns. It’s still very pretty and makes for a lovely holiday card.

  • Drawing Paper. Don’t substitute it with copy paper or construction paper. The surface will get fuzzy, erasing might cause holes, and the colors will generally not look as bright.

  • Stabilo Markers. This brand has the very sturdy thin tips that are needed to make lots of fine lines. They may be too delicate for early elementary students, but older will enjoy the precision and color that they offer.
