Leprechaun Directed Drawing FREEBIE

Leprechaun Directed Drawing FREEBIE: I love to draw, paint, and create. It’s sort of my fav thing to do. When I can take a moment to breathe at school and help my kids draw, I love it…and they love it! Directed drawing is a great way to get kids to practice following directions. See more about why and how I use them HERE.

Leprechauns are awesome for St Patrick’s Day! We use Silly McGilly in our classroom. You can see more HERE. Directed drawings are the best for listening skills and following directions. PLUS they are fun! I am always amazed at how unique and different each one turns out! If you have never done a guided drawing, you should give it a try. And why not with a free one?

We did these little leprechauns yesterday and I was so impressed at how they turned out!

The online tutorials are easy to follow; they teach you the how to draw basics while showing you how to draw fun cartoon characters step by step. Each cartoon character has a video drawing tutorial option, as well as step-by-step photos and written text to follow.

To draw a Leprecahun step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to go at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, and each step is explained in the text below the photo, so you’ll know exactly what to draw in each step. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods! Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The written step-by-step video tutorial:

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Lightly sketch two small ovals for the leprechaun’s eyes. When you get the shapes of the eyes right, darken the lines. Inside each eye, draw two tiny circles to represent glare. Shade the eyes but don’t overlap the tiny glare circles. Draw a small, curved line over each eye for extra detail.

Step 2: Draw a short, vertical line to the left of the eyes for the side of the head. Below that, draw a curved line for the leprechaun’s cheek. Continue to draw the line and curve it toward the right side for the bottom of the head. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. When you get the shape right, darken the line.

Step 3: Below the eye on the left, draw a tiny, C-shaped line for the leprechaun’s nose. Below the eye on the right, farther down, draw a short, horizontal line for the mouth.

Step 4: Starting on the left side of the leprechaun’s head, draw a long, wavy line across the top for the hat’s brim. The left side of the line should dip low, and the right side should curve up. Curve the left tip up and the right tip down. The whole thing should be similar to the letter S on its side.

Step 5: On the right side of the head, draw a thick rectangular shape for the leprechaun’s hair and sideburn. Use short, curved lines to draw the edges of the shape for a curly texture.
