They will learn how to draw the shape of the nutcrackers head and body, the different ways to draw the nutcracker's uniform designs, the nutcracker's beard and hair, and the nutcracker's eyes, mouth, and nose. I draw with a marker, however student may use a pencil if they like. Students will get coloring tips and begin coloring their nutcracker using any colors of their choice. Teacher Expertise

I have been drawing, painting, and creating artwork for many years. I have also been teaching elementary school aged kids for over four years. I have used markers to draw various subjects with my students in my own classroom.

Supply List

Learners may use any drawing tools that they like: markers, crayons, colored pencils, gel pens, digital, etc. Here are the materials that I use: -Art Markers: I use sharpies for most of my coloring, but I also sometimes use dual tip marker pens that have a brush tip and a fine tip. Any markers that your learner likes should be fine, but I do suggest having a variety of colors. This particular drawing uses red, light pink, brown (tan or peach are also okay - any color you want your learner to use for the nutcracker's face and hands), gold, and black. -Marker Paper: This can be any size your learner likes to use, as long as it is durable enough for marker drawing. There are usually drawing pads that say "marker and watercolor paper" that can be found in many stores! -If you are using a pencil, make sure it is a good one! I use the Ticonderoga pencils because they are a lot harder to break, but any number 2 pencil is fine. I also suggest a really good eraser! The pink erasers or a gum eraser are both amazing. Other erasers work, but not as well.

Drawing a nutcracker step by step…

This nutcracker is divided into four sections. This column like structure makes it easy for your students to create a drawing that’s big and fills the page.

I’ll walk your students through every line and shape, all the while encouraging them to take those directions and make their drawing their own!

Adding color to your nutcracker drawing…

When your students are done with their nutcracker drawing I’ll give them some suggestions for how to add color and create a finished artwork.

This nutcracker directed drawing will take about 15 minutes or so to draw and another fifteen minutes or so to add color! This is a great holiday project or creative experience leading up to watching the Nutcracker in person!

Read a version of The Nutcracker

Your children may not be familiar with the story of The Nutcracker. Below you will find several different versions of the story you could share with your children.

Getting Ready for the Activity

The first thing you will need to do is decide which version in the How to Draw the Nutcracker with a Blockly Block Algorithm worksheet set you will want your children to work on. There are three versions of the worksheet in the set.

Offline Code Academy- How to Draw a Nutcracker with a Algorithm- worksheet with words and pictures

First, you will find a worksheet that features words and pictures in the Blockly blocks.

Next, you will find a worksheet that features just words on the Blockly blocks. This version invites your children to decide what each algorithm set is asking them to do. They won’t have a picture to refer to as they figure out how to draw a nutcracker.

Offline Code Academy- How to Draw a Nutcracker with a Algorithm- worksheet with words

Finally, you will find a version that just has pictures on the Blockly blocks. Children will have to look carefully at each of the pictures to see what they will need to add to their nutcracker. If you have children that have reading challenges or don’t read English, this would be a great version for them.

Starting the Activity

There are many ways you can have your children work on this activity. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, you can have this set be part of a coding activity, Nutcracker unit, or art center. After reading your children one of the books above, you could have them do any of the following:

  • Work on drawing the nutcracker step by step as a group.
  • Have children work on it in a center on their own.
  • Use it to introduce Blockly block coding to your students. Then you can have them follow the algorithm to work on it on their own.

If you like this Offline Code Academy worksheet, here are some more draw and color algorithm worksheets. Each of them as a list of children’s books you can read with or to your children to introduce the worksheets theme.
