Pressing Too Hard: Some students might press too firmly with the pencil when sketching. This can lead to dark, hard-to-erase lines that interfere with the final drawing.

Let’s Paint the Flowers and Fingerprint Butterflies!

Image featuring a hand painting the long green stem on a piece of white paper.

Step 1: Use a paintbrush to draw a collection of long green stems.

The Buddleia has large, drooping spikes of densely clustered, small, purple (or sometimes white) flowers and has long, narrow leaves.

Image featuring a hand painting the third green stem. The stems branch out from different angles on the paper.

With this in mind, paint the stems from different angles on the paper, this will allow space for the large distinctive drooping flower effect and leaves.

Step 2: Scrunch up a piece of scrap paper into a tight ball.

To achieve optimal texture in your prints, focus on using the area of the ball with the highest number of creases.

This deliberate choice will enhance the texture and create more pronounced and interesting impressions.

Step 3: Dip the ball of paper into purple paint and print along the stem.

At the base of the stem (edge of the paper) create a wide print that gradually tapers as you move towards the tip – this will help capture the distinctive form of the buddleia flower.

Image of a hand completing the 3rd stem - all are filled with purple prints, shaped like a buddiea flowers - these form the basis of the butterfly bush.

Continue painting along each individual stem, extend the prints from wide to narrow along each. This will establish the first layer of our flower, forming the foundation for further artistic development.

Image of a hand printing a shade of pink on top of the purple. This creates a sense of roundness and texture to the flower shape.

Step 4: Scrunch up a second piece of paper and dip it into a lighter shade of pink.

Similarly to the previous step, use the paper ball for printing pink paint along the stem.

This deliberate choice of color against the purple backdrop will introduce tonal variations and sense of roundness and depth to the flower.

Take care not to completely cover the underlying purple paint.

Step 5: Next, bunch up a collection of eco-friendly Q-tips and secure with a rubber band.

Gently dip the Q-tips into white paint and use them sparingly to print within the center of the flower.

This printing technique serves to enhance definition, subtly suggesting the individual flowers that form the cluster.

It’s a wonderfully simple method that adds texture and creates intrigue, enriching the overall visual effect of the artwork.

Step 6: Use a paint brush to paint the long thin leaves.

Utilize the white space between the flowers to depict the long, drooping leaves of the butterfly bush.

Paint the leaf shapes in a vibrant green color, and for added tone and definition, paint a white center line along each leaf.

This simple yet effective technique swiftly enhances the visual appeal of the leaves, providing them with depth and definition.

Step 7: Choose two contrasting colors for the butterflies. Take your finger and immerse it in one of the colors, then proceed to print the first set of wings for the butterfly.

Prior to printing onto the paper, ensure to remove excess paint by first dabbing it onto a piece of scrap paper.

This step helps control the amount of paint applied and prevents any unintentional smudging or excessive saturation when printing.

Step 8: Use a finger to print the second set of butterfly wings.

Fill the empty white spaces surrounding the flowers with as many butterflies as you desire to create using your fingers.

Keep in mind that these flowers are known to attract butterflies, so feel free to add as many as you like!

The more butterflies you include, the livelier and more enchanting your artwork will become.

Step 9: Use a black maker pen to add some detailing to the butterflies.

This could take the form of dotted flight trails….

And antennae to the butterflies, along with thick black bodies. These additional details will provide the finishing touch to the fingerprint butterflies, adding a sense of realism and completeness to their appearance.

Step 2: Building Dark and Light Values with Colored Pencils

In this step of the art lesson, you will transition from the initial sketch to adding depth and dimension to your butterfly drawing. You’ll achieve this by using black and white colored pencils on the toned paper. The contrast between the dark and light values you create will bring your butterfly to life.

Common Challenges for Students:

Overblending: One of the most common issues is overblending. This happens when students accidentally mix the black and white colored pencils too much, resulting in a gray, muddy color that can flatten the image.

Inconsistent Pressure: Maintaining a consistent and light pressure while layering the colored pencils can be challenging. Inconsistent pressure can lead to uneven shading and an unbalanced appearance.

Incorrect Placement of Values: Placing darker values next to lighter ones incorrectly can distort the overall contrast and shape of the butterfly, making it look less realistic.

Educational Tips for Art Teachers:

✅Teach students to use short strokes and light pressure when applying both black and white colored pencils. This technique allows for better control and prevents overblending.

✅Provide visual examples or demonstrations to illustrate how overblending can create undesirable gray tones. Emphasize the importance of keeping the black and white colors separate.

✅Explain the significance of correct value placement for creating the illusion of depth and form. Use references or visual aids to help students understand how values affect the appearance of objects.

Practical Tips for Students:

✅Sharpen your colored pencils to a fine point before starting. This ensures precision and controlled application.

✅Begin by layering the black colored pencil in areas that require darker values, such as shadows or areas with more contrast. Take your time and build up the darkness gradually.

✅Use the white colored pencil for areas that should be lighter or have highlights. Again, use light pressure and layer the white as needed.

✅Avoid heavy blending between the black and white pencils. Instead, allow them to overlap gradually to create transitions between dark and light areas.

✅Refer to your reference image frequently to ensure you’re accurately placing values according to the subject. Pay attention to the subtle variations in light and shadow.

By practicing these techniques and being mindful of your pressure and value placement, you can effectively add depth and dimension to your butterfly drawing while maintaining the striking contrast between the black and white areas. This step will help bring your artwork closer to its final, detailed form.

Step 3: Creating the Background

In this step of your art lesson, you’ll shift your focus to the background of your butterfly drawing. Your goal here is to craft a background that not only complements the butterfly but also adds depth and atmosphere to the overall composition.

Common Challenges for Students:

Overworking the Background: A common pitfall is adding excessive detail or shading to the background, which can overpower the main subject, the butterfly, and make the drawing visually cluttered.

Inconsistent Background Values: Achieving a smooth transition from the butterfly to the background can be tricky. Sudden or harsh changes in tone can disrupt the flow of the artwork.

Impatience: This step requires patience. Some students may rush, leading to uneven background shading and a less appealing composition.

Educational Tips for Art Teachers:

✅ Stress the idea that the background should complement, not overshadow, the main subject (the butterfly). Encourage students to consider the overall balance of the composition.

✅ Teach students to start with a lighter background and then gradually build up layers to achieve the desired depth and atmosphere. Remind them that it’s easier to darken the background as needed than to lighten it.

✅ Demonstrate how to blend the background smoothly into the toned paper. Show techniques for creating gentle transitions to avoid abrupt changes in tone that can distract from the butterfly.

Practical Tips for Students:

✅ Begin by lightly sketching the outline of the butterfly’s shape on the background. This serves as a guide and ensures a clean transition between the subject and the background.

✅ When applying background shading initially, use light pressure. It’s much simpler to add more darkness if required than to lighten an area that has become too dark.

✅ Work in layers as you build up the background value. Gradual layering helps you achieve a smooth transition and depth. Remember that patience is key in this step.

✅ When blending the background, do so gently and softly into the toned paper. Avoid creating harsh lines that might disrupt the overall flow of the composition.

✅ Periodically step back from your work to assess your progress. Ensure that the background enhances the butterfly without overwhelming it. Keep the butterfly as the focal point of your drawing.

Remember that the background’s role is to provide context and atmosphere, enhancing the overall composition. By approaching this step patiently and with attention to detail, you can achieve a balanced and visually appealing high-contrast butterfly drawing. Most importantly, enjoy the artistic process and have fun with your artwork!
