Make this Dollar store Scarecrow wreath in a matter of minutes with my simple and easy tutorial. He is a fun whimsical front door fall wreath.

Scarecrow Wreath tutorial

Almost all of my supplie s came from the Dollar store! I love a good frugal decor project, don’t you!

Supplies

  • 12″ Foam wreath form (craft supply store)
  • Raffia
  • 6 bunches of Fall silk leaf bunches
  • 2 Small Faux pumpkins
  • Mini hay bale
  • Burlap ribbon to wrap wreath form
  • Ribbon of choice for hanger
  • Small Scarecrow on a Stick
  • Hot Glue

How to make a scarecrow wreath step by step tutorial. Also, see the video below.

Step 1

Begin by wrapping the wreath form with the burlap ribbon and glue down the end using Hot Glue.

Step 2

Next, wrap the Raffia strips around the wreath tying each piece in a knot. My Raffia came from the Dollar store and there were three sets in each bag. Once you open the bag and unravel the raffia, you will see that each piece is in strips. It is not one long strip, thankfully.

I used a total of five bunches from two bags for this wreath.

It will take a few minutes to add the Raffia and there is a trick to tying it without breaking. See the video for that demonstration.

Raffia Tips

Where Not to add Raffia! Skip a space at the top of the wreath to add your hanger.

Because my Scarecrow Wreath design includes beautiful fall silk bunches and a Scarecrow, I skipped the bottom and half of each side as well. I used a pushpin to hold my hanger in place while crafting the wreath. It was removed once the wreath was complete.

Step 3 Adding the hay bale and scarecrow

My favorite part of wreath making is adding fun pieces!

Hot glue the mini hay bale to the inside bottom of the wreath as shown above. My Scarecrow was on a stick which created the perfect tool for inserting him into the hay bale.

I used a pair of snips to cut the stick to the correct size and positioned him into place.

Step 4 Add the Fall leaves

No hot glue is needed when adding the leaf picks. They will insert firmly into the foam wreath form. Use your snips to cut each stem from the bunch so you can insert each piece individually.

I started adding in the fall leaves on each side just under where the Raffia stops.

Keep the design symmetrical

This particular wreath is crafted to match symmetrically on each side. Where I added an item on one side, I did the same on the other.

To keep the symmetry organized, I laid out my leaf picks on opposite sides of the wreath on my work table. I went back and forth from one side to the other matching the pieces as I added them.

Keep adding leaves until you achieve the fullness desired and your scarecrow wreath will be ready to hang on your front door.

A front door scarecrow wreath is a perfect greeting for your Fall guests and even more for yourself.

See the scarecrow wreath video tutorial for step by step instructions you can see.

My goal was for this scarecrow wreath idea was for him to appear to be sitting in a leaf pile.

I think I achieved that look by sitting him on the hay bale and piling the leaves all around him. He will be a bright, happy, and colorful greeting on our front door this fall!

Do I Have To Use A Grapevine Wreath?

When you are making this scarecrow wreath, you don’t have to use a grapevine wreath if you don’t want to. I prefer the look and style of a grapevine wreath form for this project, but you could also use styrofoam wreath instead. Just make sure to wrap it in burlap or ribbon before decorating, so it looks better.

Can I Make This Wreath A Different Size?

Yes, absolutely you can make this wreath in all sorts of sizes. It was my preference to make an 8-inch wreath because I was going to hang it on my wall in a smaller area. If you are looking for fall wreaths for your front door or another large area, feel free to make a gigantic wreath.

No, this autumn wreath isn’t complicated at all to make. If’s simple enough that children can help with it. The hardest part for them would be learning how to use a glue gun without getting burnt. Kids love helping make wreaths though.

Even if you are a beginning crafter, there are no worries. If you know how to shop and use a glue gun, you are all set. So don’t be scared at all to give it a try!

What Are Some Other Ideas To Add To My Wreath?

You can really add all sorts of items besides scarecrows and sunflowers. Fall is notorious for lots of style and colors. Here are some fantastic ideas for you to try:
