How to create a galaxy background

1. Alcohol Ink
Using this matte black yupo paper, I dropped Alcohol Ink pearls onto my surface. Then I used an air puffer and a straw as well as this blending solution to create a very ethereal effect. For some more space elements, I used this silver mixative for some metallic drops.

Creating an Easy Galaxy Background!

Thanks for joining me today for another fun Heffy Doodle project. It’s Father’s Day today so I’m sharing how I made this fun, Father’s Day card with an easy way to create a galaxy background.

I started off by cutting all the pieces for the Brooke 3D Box Card from some gorgeous Heffy Doodle Huckleberry Cardstock.

Starting with this dark blue cardstock really makes creating a galaxy background super easy. All you need to do is blob some ink over top to create the ‘supernova’ affect. I like to use Distress Oxide Inks as they sit on top of the paper. Finish off by blending a black ink around the edges and then go to town with splattering a white watercolour paint or watered down ink over top for that star detail. So much fun!

Before assembling my box card, I white heat embossed my sentiment onto the front strip and added a little bit of black ink to create some contrast.

Assembling the box card is super easy – start by attaching the angled side pieces to the back panel, then attach the front flap pieces, making sure the embossed sentiment is right at the very front.

I used images from the Spaced Out and You’re Weird stamp sets which I coloured and cut out using the coordinating dies and my Heffy Doodle Mini Die Cutting Machine. I glued my moon piece to the back of the very front panel and then mounted the other images onto some Heffy Doodle Extra Thick Clear Acetate so I could have them ‘floating’ in my galaxy.

Finally, I cut the word ‘dad’ three times from some Heffy Doodle Alcohol Marker Friendly Cardstock, using the Moxie Alphabet dies. I coloured one set with my red Copics to match the rocket ship. I layered these together with some glue, finishing with the red letters, which I offset slightly to create a drop shadow. This really helps the letters pop from that dark blue background.

It turned out so cute and it was really easy to create that galaxy background using the dark blue cardstock. To see the full tutorial, pop over to the Heffy Doodle YouTube Channel

Happy Father’s Day and see you next month!

I used similar color themes in all of the projects below so it would be easier to compare. I laid down shades of blues and purples. Then once it was dry, I added in black to cover most (but not all of the galaxy). I then flicked some stars over top with this starry watercolor paint.

I used glitter gel in turquoise and purple for my first layers on heavyweight black cardstock. Once it dried, I came back and pasted black glitter gel to cover some fo the colors.

I used this metallic watercolor set to add shades of pinks, blue and purples onto heavyweight black cardstock, let it dry, then I covered it up with black watercolor paint.

4. Distress Oxide Ink Smooshing
I heat embossed a galaxy stamp onto watercolor paper. Then I smooshed some distress oxide ink onto a non-porous surface. I spritz the oxide ink with water, and I smooshed my project down on it to pick up the color. The heat embossed image resists all of that ink.

5. Glitter and Glossy Accents
I started with a piece of galaxy cardstock but I wanted to step it up a notch. Using glossy accents, I made little squiggles and starts and planets. Then I poured loose glitter over top. The results is a dimensional, sparkly galaxy background.

Hi! I was recently in same situation. I felt I couldn’t even be creative anymore. I was so overwhelmed by all the stuff I had. I went through my entire craft room. I touched everything. I made a pile of all the things I didn’t like or don’t use, including paper and stamp sets. And either donated, gave away or sold them. Then I organized all the things I kept and revamped my craft room. By reorganizing and touching everything, I feel I know better what I have. I am able to create again, and love to be in my stamp room. You are off to a great start! Keep it going. Love to watch your videos! Can’t wait until you can be back crafting again!
