- When do people make gingerbread houses, and why? Gingerbread houses are traditionally associated with the Christmas season. The tradition of constructing these houses may be traced to medieval Europe, when gingerbread was used to decorate Christmas celebrations.
- Who do you think came up with the idea of a gingerbread house? The invention of the gingerbread house is attributed to a pastry chef at the court of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603). He created an example of a model house made from biscuits and decorated with icing, which he then gave as a gift to the Queen.
- In 1847, German bakers created an edible gingerbread house made from pre-cut pieces.
- In 1869, American cook Eliza Leslie published her recipe for “Gingerbread Nuts,” which she called “the most delicious morsel that can be placed upon human lips.”
- Gingerbread houses are a popular holiday tradition for many people.
- Gingerbread houses are made from edible, spiced cookie dough, baked, and cut into shapes before being decorated with icing and candy.
- Conrad of Pforzheim created the first gingerbread house in the 13th century.
- The first gingerbread house kit was produced in 1890 by a British company called Huntley & Palmer.
