  Programs

  

  This one and one-half day workshop will be an opportunity to learn about painting clouds. Shepherd artist Connie Herberg is known by some as the queen of cloud painting. She will instruct this workshop using a creative look at forms and features of clouds, then teach students how to represent them with oil paint. Instruction will guide students through the process of how to look at clouds as a specific subject, their relationship to the land, and light sources. Brushes, a palette knife, and other less conventional equipment will be explored in order to depict the subject matter.

  Day 1: Saturday, May 14, 2022 – 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
  Day 2: Sunday, May 15, 2022 – 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
  Class size: 8
  Skill level: Student needs to have a working knowledge of the materials
  Cost: $120 per person; 10% discount for Guild members

  Registration is required. Payment is required at time of registration. Participants will be given a supply list at the time of registration. Please bring your own lunch. If you prefer to eat in Red Lodge, the Arts Guild can provide suggestions to local eateries. The workshop will take place at the Roosevelt Center.

  About the Instructor: Connie Herberg attended both NDSU Fargo, North Dakota and Eastern Montana College, now Montana State University, Billings graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Along with her education, her experience includes an amalgamation of workshops, peer influences, self-study, practice and passion. Herberg maintains a studio in her home in Shepherd, Montana where she paints and occasionally teaches.

  She has always felt part of the landscape and that remains an overarching theme in her work. Growing up the oldest of four in a farming family at the northwest corner of North Dakota, she was strongly influenced by her mother and maternal grandmother and their creative pursuits. Herberg continues to take available opportunities to learn from artists that she admires. With camera always at the ready while hunting, fishing, or camping, she records the changing seasons and many nuances of the landscape. Herberg places a strong emphasis on drafting skills and observation from life, believing that developing an understanding of the subject and mastering the transcription from observation to art form is the ultimate goal.
