September in the art room typically means one thing; back to school! Whether you are just starting back after Labor Day or you’ve been back for a few weeks already; by mid-September everyone is firmly in the groove of the new school year.

Honor National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th until October 15th each year. This is a great time to dive into the rich culture and heritage of over twenty diverse Hispanic countries, like Spain, Mexico, parts of Central & South American and the Caribbean.

Celebrate the Autumn Season

September also ushers in autumn for us in the northern hemisphere, so it’s a great time to thing about leaves, scarecrows and all of the warm, rich colors of fall. Getting a head start with fall lessons early in the month can ensure that your hallways will be ready for the season by the end of the month.

September Art Guide

The September art world calendar seems busier than usual this year, with many postponed and cancelled events from the past year finding a new slot this month. To help you keep track, we’ve put together a selection of gallery weekends, art weeks, festivals, biennials, and fairs taking place around the world. Several of these events also offer a hybrid format, featuring both in-person and digital programming, so viewers can tune in no matter where they’re based.

Art Fairs

The eighth edition of POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair will kick off ahead of Berlin Art Week this year, ushering in the busy Berlin art season with an exciting mix of international galleries and emerging artistic positions. In addition to presenting 110 galleries throughout two spacious hangars at Tempelhof Airport, POSITIONS also developed the online platform Live.POSITIONS last year, which will again make it possible to engage with the galleries, artworks, and program virtually. Also taking place during the fair is Academy POSITIONS by Berlin Hyp — a special exhibition of young contemporary artists who are graduates of art schools in Germany and beyond. And Selected POSITIONS will once again offer new collectors a start into the art market with a curated exhibition of small-scale and affordable works.

UNBLOCK fairartfair presents the work of 100 artists from the Studios ID complex in Lichtenberg. Based at the former Operative Technical Sector of East-German State Security, the site consists of two connected block buildings spanning a total of 11 floors, as well as an art garden area, offering a unique art experience with plenty to discover. The fair is curated by Denis Leo Hegic and Jan Gustav Fiedler, with the aim of transforming the former place of restriction into one of free expression. During the opening of the fair on September 10th, UNBLOCK Art Awards and the Nerma Linsberger Art Award will also be presented to the winning artists. With its open studio setting, UNBLOCK facilitates direct exchange with artists at the point of creation, offering an art fair as a bridge between artists and art lovers, and direct access to Berlin’s creative scene.

The sixth edition of photo basel, Switzerland’s first and only international art fair dedicated to photography-based art, will take place during Art Basel week. Forty international galleries, both young and established, will exhibit contemporary and historic photographic positions across both floors of the Volkshaus Basel. Special projects taking place during the fair include the third iteration of the Master Cabinet, which presents a selection of vintage prints; plus, individual portrait shoots will be offered by the Swiss Grand Award for Design 2021 winner, acclaimed fashion photographer Peter Knapp. And, in light of the mass flooding in Germany and Europe this July, photo basel will also present the Flooded art project, dedicating a small space to flood-destroyed art in order to highlight the impact of climate change. The fair is a dynamic event for the international photography community and beyond, fostering dialogue and exchange, and acting as a hub for artistic photography.

Now in its 27th edition, the renowned New York art fair is taking place this month at its new permanent home — the Javits Center. This year’s edition presents a hybrid program with 157 international exhibitors on site and 55 more featured on the Armory Show’s new digital platform, developed in partnership with Artlogic. The fair will also comprise a program of in-person conversations, as well as The Curatorial Leadership Summit, prizes and more. Alongside the Armory Show’s main exhibitor section, ‘Presents’ puts a spotlight on emerging and young galleries, while the new ‘Solo’ section features single-artist booths. Two curated sections, ‘Focus’ and ‘Platform’ will also explore international curatorial perspectives. The latter, titled Can you hear the fault lines breathing? features eight large-scale installations and site-specific works by artists Julian Charrière and Grayson Perry, among others.

Following its cancellation last year and the postponement of this year’s June edition, Art Basel is back and packed full of exhibitors, artists, and public programming. This year’s Basel edition brings together 272 leading galleries from around the world with presentations ranging from historical masterpieces to new works by emerging artists. Art Basel also once again presents ‘Unlimited’, its platform for large-scale projects — curated this year by Giovanni Carmine, Director of the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, and featuring 62 projects by renowned and emerging artists. In addition, ‘Parcours’ will showcase 20 site-specific installations and performances throughout the city center, including a public walk by Hamish Fulton on Basel’s Marktplatz; while Basel’s Messeplatz will further engage audiences in public space with two art interventions by Monster Chetwynd and Cecilia Bengolea.
