Get the Facts

Learn about gender inequity in the arts with some eye-opening facts.

The truth is that women have never been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. Counting and quantifying won’t solve discrimination, but statistics are useful for understanding the scope of the problem. As NMWA Director Susan Fisher Sterling says, “People in the art world want to think we are achieving parity more quickly than we are.”

Creative Dundee

This summer Art Night will deliver its first full iteration in a city outside London. On the evening of Saturday 24 June from 7pm until late, ten major commissions by artists including Saoirse Amira Anis, Tai Shani, and Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley will be presented in civic and public spaces across Dundee.

Alongside the commissions is Inwith; a series of projects highlighting Dundee’s expansive art and communities programming. The Inwith programme comprises 12 projects across a range of local partners including Open/Close Dundee, Wooosh Gallery, Dundee Community Gardens Network/Grow Dundee, Dundee Women’s Aid, Hot Chocolate Trust, The Binnn, Volk Gallery and more!

We can’t wait to see the Art Night spotlight shine on these local, grassroots organisations alongside Dundee’s world-renowned cultural hubs. Don’t miss it!

The Inwith programme:

  • Celebrate locally grown food and friendship at the Community Gardens Open Day with Dundee Community Garden Network/Grow Dundee, featuring gigs, exhibitions, bug hunting, sun printing and more across the city’s gardens.
  • Visit Dundee Heritage Trust’s Creative Communities Network installation Aurora Australis, exploring RRS Discovery’s polar collection and the array of local and global issues raised by climate change.
  • Co-designed by Connecting Women Project participants at Dundee Women’s Aid (DWA), Journey to Connection showcases a collaged reflection of each contributor’s personal journey.
  • Join Federation Gallery for Keiller Nights an evening of glam rock, funk and disco led by The Bad Kisses.
  • Visit the wonderful world of Hot Chocolate Trust for their interactive installation LTD Edition showcasing young people’s art and culture.
  • Nomas* Projects present For Some the Clouds Become Solid Ground, an interactive performance and collaboration between artist Sarah White and musician tyroneisaacstuart.
  • Partnering with independent coffee bar EH9 Espresso, Open/Close Dundee launch their Billboard Gallery which aims to create a self-perpetuating, outdoor gallery space.
  • Unconventional Dundee gallery The Binnn present Get in the Binnn, a trio of wheelie bins placed along the Art Night route exhibiting artwork by recent Dundee arts graduates.
  • The Speedwell Bar will be hosting a live traditional music session with the University of Dundee’s TradSoc alongside a showcase of works by local artist Lindabee Draws Dundee.
  • V&A Dundee’s Young People’s Collective ask When is a Jug Not a Jug? in a series of Poster Zines and a mini zine making workshop.
  • With work including drawing, video, and sculpture, Glasgow-based artist David Sherry presents a retrospective of his performative practice in A Generalising at Volk Gallery.
  • Visit Wooosh Gallery for the world’s first Wooosh Flower Show and a head-to-head battle between Dundee’s community gardens in the Wooosh Flower Showdown!

In the lead up to Art Night and following on from the festival, join us for two special events exploring how artists and communities creatively use and reimagine space in and around the city. At Taking Space / Making Space, we’ll hear from some of the groups featured in the Inwith Programme alongside the organisers behind Art Night.

Art Night Dundee is supported by Creative Scotland and EventScotland’s National Events Programme. National partners include The Art Fund; The Tetley, Leeds; Creative Kernow; Museum of London and Serpentine.

Art Night is a biannual contemporary art festival presenting ambitious work by artists at pivotal moments in their career. Developing within towns, villages and cities across the country, Art Night takes place in public spaces and civic buildings. The festival is free and everyone is welcome.
