Have students illustrate the “Meaning of Christmas” either on paper or in their sketchbooks using at least 3 mediums and materials. You can even provide scrap pieces of wrapping paper if you’ve done some early wrapping (never through it out!! It’s perfect for collage). Let them draw the meaning of Christmas and finish the picture with their choice of 3 mediums and materials. Let the creativity and critical thinking flourish in the last days before winter break!

Coming up with ideas for what to do with your students before Christmas break can often be difficult, especially when you’re burnt out and tired from both teaching and getting-ready-for-Christmas-life outside of work. Here are 6 Art Activity Ideas that you can do in your classroom to be prepared and done planning before your vacation days start.
Christmas Art Project Tutorial on YouTube
To get you started, I created this Christmas Art Project of a bird with a Santa Hat and present for YouTube, which means that it is free for you to use and I promise that it is classroom-friendly! This art project can be played in your room to give you a break and your students can simply follow along! Do this project on paper or fold a piece of card stock paper in half…. do it on the front and… BOOM! Christmas Cards.
Christmas Still Life Drawing
Bring in enough Christmas items for your students (or have them each bring 1 in, but I find this never happens) and have them draw a still life of the Christmas object! Bring in old Christmas decorations or ornaments, ask for your student’s families to donate ones they don’t want, or head on over to a thrift store or dollar store for cheap solutions. You only probably need around 30 (one for each student) and they can be re-used if you teach multiple classes AND every year to come. Just have things such as ornaments or candy canes! Have them draw a still life drawing of the object either in colored pencil, plain pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, watercolor paints, or ink! They can even do multiple studies of the object in multiple mediums or trade their object after their first drawing and do a second drawing after in a different medium. The combinations of what you can do are endless!
