Mod Podge Uses

Mod Podge is a bit of a miracle product when it comes to art and craft. It can be used as a glue to stick items onto other items, such as paper and fabric onto wood and tin. It can also be used as a sealer or varnish that is applied over the top of your finished work to protect it from dust and the elements, as well as give it a matte, gloss, glitter or satin finish.

How To Use Mod Podge

Mod Podge can be applied using a number of applicator tools, but one of the most common methods is to use a paintbrush with Taklon bristles. This soft brush will apply the product to many hard and soft surfaces with an even layer and give you the least amount of brushstrokes.
Shop our Mod Podge Brush Set which comes with one 2.5cm brush and a 5cm brush for covering wide areas.

Mod Podge Sealer and Glue

Mod Podge is a fantastic water-base sealer and glue that can be used to not only stick items onto surfaces, but seal them to protect from dust, fingerprints and the elements. It’s also non-yellowing and will prevent decoupage paper from discolouring over time.
Glue porous materials such as fabric and paper onto surfaces such as wood, glass and tin, before applying multiple layers of the same product over the top to finish and stop it from peeling, cracking and becoming stained.

Matte Or Gloss?

When giving the final touch to your art and craft project, you’ll have the option to decide whether you want a matte or gloss finish. A matte finish will give your work a smooth appearance that is flat and deflects the light. A gloss finish will add a brilliant shine to your work which will make it eye-catching under the sun and artificial lights.
We sell different types of matte and gloss Mod Podge finishes. Get a rustic, time-worn look with our Plaid Mod Podge in Antique Matte or easily protect your work with the Mod Podge Ultra Matte spray that resist dust and fingerprints.
The Mod Podge Paper Gloss Finish is perfect for gluing and sealing your paper craft projects or use the Super Thick Gloss to give your work a hard, glassy finish with a gorgeous shine.

Different Types Of Mod Podge

This wonder product comes in an exciting range of formulas to help you achieve the look and feel you want for your project. All can glue, seal and finish your work – but the one you use will depend on your individual preferences.
We’ve got regular Mod Podge Matte and Gloss Finish to add shine or take it away. There’s Extreme Glitter and Mega Glitter mediums to add sparkle, Antique Mod Podge for a vintage aesthetic, Dishwasher Safe and Mod Podge Outdoor that are water-resistant, as well as Hard Coat for decoupage furniture projects with a satin finish.
We’ve also got Dimensional Magic to add texture, image transfer mediums for photos and Mod Podge Wash Out Kids Glue for all of your kids crafts projects that’s non-toxic and washable.

Is Mod Podge Waterproof?

Regular Mod Podge can withstand a bit of water but can’t be fully submerged safely. To use in washers and dishwashers, you’ll need a special formula, such as our Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge which can be used for glass and ceramics to make them more durable or Outdoor Mod Podge which is highly water-resistant and can protect outdoor craft projects from the rain.

Surfaces To Work On

Mod Podge works on many different surfaces as both a glue and a sealer. Most commonly, it’s used in decoupage to adhere paper to hard surfaces such as wood or glass. However, there are many other porous and nonporous surfaces you can work with, including:
1. Fabric
2. Wood
3. Glass
4. Ceramic
5. Tin

The Effect of Mixing Mod Podge with Acrylic Paint

As I said earlier, Mod podge is water-based and acrylic, it’s not waterproof. What it does is seal the acrylic paint so that it sticks fine to the surface you’re painting.

Though some acrylic paints are self-sealing, mixing them with mod podge adds extra sealing, which prevents chipping or darkening of the acrylic colors.

To make your artwork waterproof, I recommend that you apply a clear acrylic sealer on your artwork once it’s dry. In a nutshell, mixing mod podge to your acrylic paint does the following:

  • It improves the consistency of the acrylic paint by making it flow more fluidly and smoothly. Acrylic paints dry out too fast, adding mod podge prevents this.
  • It improves the adhesion of the acrylic paints to surfaces, giving a sturdy painted surface.
  • It leaves your painting with vibrant and bold colors.

How to Mix Mod Podge with Acrylic Paint?

Mixing mod podge with acrylic paint is an easy task when you follow these steps:

Ezoic

  • Pour out your acrylic paint into a small container. Take note of the quantity. If you’re using different colors, pour different colors into different containers.
  • Add 2x the quantity of mod podge to each acrylic paint in the containers. Adding too much may wrinkle and/or smudge your artwork.
  • Add little water to each container and mix everything gently using a small-sized spatula until you achieve a homogenous mixture.
  • If you want a lighter mixture, you can add a little more water. But be careful not to add too much water. Adding too much water will not only make the mixture too thin but also affect the pigment density and adhesion of the paint. Once you achieve the consistency of honey, you can start using your acrylic paint. Advertisements

Pros and Cons of Mixing Mod Podge with Acrylic Paint

  • Priming is not necessary when painting with acrylic paints mixed with mod podge. The mod podge will improve the adhesion of the acrylic paint to the surface so that the surface needs no prior priming.
  • Mod podge prevents cracking and crazing of the acrylic painting.
  • Being water-based and acrylic, mod podge is non-toxic.
  • It gives your work a shiny finish. Advertisements
  • It maintains the original color of the acrylic paint.

How to do Decoupage

How to do decoupage

Decoupage is the process of beautifying ordinary and everyday objects. Usually one needs to draw or paint to make an item colorful. But with decoupage one can skip the drawing process but yet produce stunning results. Decoupage involves pasting paper or pieces of paper on any surface using glue. Grownups and children alike can learn and practice the art of decoupage.

Basic items for Decoupage – Basic kit

  • Flat brush set
  • Artist Gesso or White Acrylic Paint
  • Mod Podge (Matt)
  • Decoupage tissue (as per choice)
  • Glass Bottle

These items are available in art and craft stores. For more details please check out this link.

  • Gesso takes a lot of time to dry. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the drying. Meanwhile you can prepare the tissue paper for pasting. First plan which part of the tissue you want to cut and paste. Trace the outline of the cutting portion with a wet brush. The tissue needs to be torn by fingers to give the desired effect. If the tissue is two or more ply, remove the extra white sheets.

Apply a single stroke of mod podge with a broad brush. Place one side of the tissue gently so that no air bubble are trapped between the tissue and glass. Keep applying broad strokes of mod podge and placing the tissue paper on it. Once the tissue is fully placed, apply another layer of Mod Podge as a finisher. Allow it to dry.

Mod Podge is a three in one decoupage glue. It is a sealer, glue and finisher. Mod Podge is a brand by Placid which is specially made for decoupage. It is the most popular glue used in decoupage.

    Finishing decoupage

One can use acrylic colors to enhance the area surrounding the tissue paper. Use a brush, sponge or even your finger to apply color to get the desired effect. Use another layer of mod podge to seal the colors.
