Why you should Not Paint on Raw Fabric?

Canvases are made up of various materials that are color absorbent for the acrylics and oil paints. They get absorbed in the canvas and in time will destroy the canvas with the chemicals mixed in it. There are times when the colors lose their vibrant and the painting may be destroyed. This is the reason you should always prime the canvas. The acrylics are at times okay with being painted on unprimed canvas as well.

How can you make acrylic paint dry faster?

The drying of thick layers of the acrylic paints can be a nightmare at times! However, we have a few tricks that can help you speed up the drying time.

  • If you are up for an amateur completion, you can use the fast drying acrylic paint as it dries faster than the normal acrylic paints.
  • You can speed up the drying process of the acrylic paints by keeping it in a rather warmer room with low humidity. This will make the water in the acrylic paints dry up faster as it will tend to evaporate faster.
  • You can keep the acrylic painting under a lamp. A heat lamp will be fine but a normal yellow bulb can also do that. Don’t keep it too close as it may damage the painting. Keep it enough so that the heat reaches the painting and dries it up faster.

What canvas is best for acrylic paint?

There is a variety of canvases that you can have for acrylic painting and it all depends on your budget which canvas you want to get. The most preferable ones are cotton or linen, however, the cotton is much cheaper than linen. Being a beginner, you should prefer for a less costly canvas that is already stretched and primed. However, if you want to get into real artistry business of painting then get an unprimed canvas that you will need to stretch and prime yourself.

OIL CANVAS – The oil canvas is a canvas made is a combination of linseed oil mixed with the zinc white as a primer. Further, this is left to dry for three days after which it is sand and a layer of titanium white is applied to it. It is then kept in the drying room for 10 more days. Since you are a beginner, it is advisable that you buy a ready-made oil canvas rather than doing this process at home.

ABSORBENT CANVAS – This type of canvas is made with rabbit skin on which a compound layer of chalk and glue is applied. The layer is applied twice for the canvas to be ready for acrylic painting.

UNIVERSAL CANVAS – The universal canvas are similar to absorbent canvas. The only difference is that they are layers with two layers of titanium white. These are mostly used canvases and are cheaper as well. Being a beginner, this canvas is a good option for you.

Canvases Based On Fabric

  • LINEN – The linen fabric canvas is considered a high-quality canvas as compared to the cotton fabric canvas. This is because the canvas has fine threads that are tightly woven so that it appears smoother comparatively. The linen fabric canvas is costlier than others are and therefore it is costly for a newbie. However, this canvas is best for portrait paintings because of the smoother surface.
  • COTTON – Being a newbie, you must go for a cotton-based canvas. However, one must keep in mind that cheaper canvases have a lot of work to put into it. The cheaper the canvas in cotton fabric, the lower the quality of its weaves and threads. Go for a canvas with a medium-range in this type.
  • SYNTHETIC – This type of canvas is not quite used because it does not prove to have given better results than the other two. Moreover, it may tend to distort if you stretch it too much. However, you can crosshatch and pencil draw on this type of canvas.
  • CANVAS ROLLS and CANVAS PADS are also an option that you can try. However, we do not recommend canvas rolls as you will have to stretch and prime it. Canvas pads, on the other hand, are a better option. These thick sheets of paper come in a book-like form that you can use for painting.

The acrylic paints dry up faster. Therefore, you do not need to worry about its drying depending on the canvas type.
