Ever since he was young, Madison Memorial sophomore Anthony Miller demonstrated a talent for drawing.
He had a knack for recreating or replicating the likeness of a subject and he sharpened his skills whenever visiting his grandmother, Kathleen Miller, an artist who helped him learn how to better draw faces, eyes and noses.
“I would spend a lot of time with her and draw with her,” Anthony Miller said.

He would disappear into his bedroom and spend hours working on his art as the years passed — first with colored pencils, then acrylic paints, then charcoals. A piece might take 40-60 hours stretching over a month.
Miller — whose father, Peter Miller, played basketball at Notre Dame from 1993-97 — also played a lot of basketball, beginning in kindergarten.
He gravitated with his art to what interested him, leading to the intersection of his two biggest passions — sports and art.

“I really like sports,” the 16-year-old Miller said. “If I spend a lot of time painting something, it is something I am interested in. Sports are a topic that interest me a lot.”
That has led Miller, a 6-foot shooting guard and point guard who was on the Madison Memorial varsity basketball team last year as a freshman, to complete sports-related drawings and paintings and also paint shoes and cleats for other people, including University of Wisconsin football running back Braelon Allen. Miller described his style as realism or hyperrealism.
“The athletic world and the art world are so different and he’s so talented in both of them,” Madison Memorial boys basketball coach Steve Collins said. “I’ve coached a long time. I’ve had players who have been in more than one sport. I don’t know if I’ve had a player who is that gifted in two totally different disciplines. I hope he can do both in college because he loves both of them.”
